Eating Christmas in the Kalahari

This article is about the Christmas culture of !Kung Bushmen. The conflict between Bushmen’s culture and the author’s through the whole article. The social anthropologist, also the author use the anthropological fieldwork method to figure out the difference between Bushmen and ours. According to the author, “Perhaps, armed with that independence and with their superb knowledge of their environment, they might yet survive the future.” When we have a conflict with others’ culture, we need to consider it based on social anthropology and ethnography. And we need to understand the different culture and show our respect to them. When the author was accused that the ox is too thin to eat, the author felt that he had been taught an object lesson by the Bushmen; it had come from an unexpected corner and had hurt him in a vulnerable area. In the final paragraph, Lee wondered what the future would hold for the !Kung Bushmen with whom he had shared a memorable Christmas feast.

I. Introduction of !Kung Bushmen A. The origin of !Kung Bushmen is “The London Missionary Society brought the holiday to the southern Tswana tribes in the early nineteenth century. Later, native catechists spread the idea far and wide among the Bantu-speaking pastoralists, even in the remotest corners of the Kalahari Desert.” B. The Bushmen’s idea of the Christmas story is “stripped to its essentials, is “praise the birth of white man’s god-chief”; what keeps their interest in the holiday high is the Tswana-Herero custom of slaughtering an ox for his Bushmen neighbors as an annual goodwill gesture.”
II. How the anthropologist, also the author work with !Kung Bushmen He had come to the Kalahari to study the hunting and gathering subsistence economy of the !Kung, and to accomplish this it was essential not to provide them with food, share his own food, or interfere in any way with their food-gathering

    Shaki, or Napoleon A. Chagnon’s 15 month enculturation with the Yanomamo tribe, Bisaasi-teri is characterized by fear, discomfort, loneliness, nosiness, and invaluable experiences through relationships and modesty about human culture. Chagnon documents the experience through the struggle and discovery surrounding his proposed research, as his lifestyle gradually comes in sync with the natural functions of his community. Much of his focus and time was consumed by identification of genealogical records, and the establishment of informants and methods of trustworthy divulgence. Marriage, sex, and often resulting violence are the foremost driving forces within Yanomamo, and everything that we consider part of daily routine is completely unknown and inconsequential to them. Traveling between neighboring tribes, he draws conclusions about intertribal relations, especially concerning marriage and raiding. Chagnon deals with cultural complexity that takes time to decipher, and in process, potential risk. Confronted with seemingly trivial situations, they often become unexpected phenomena and Chagnon’s adherence to documentation is amazing. He encounters personal epiphanies that I find intriguing, related to privacy and hygiene. This report becomes an inspiring document of an extreme anthropologic lifestyle as much as it is a cultural essay.…

Richard Borshay Lee is a socialanthropologist who missed a great life lesson while studying this hunting-and-gathering society.In this Gemeinschaft community, they worked together to teach this anthropologist somethingimportant to their people yet he was very unaware of their intentions in the beginning. Althoughhe thought he had learned a great deal about their group and culture, he was still only beginningto learn truly what it meant to be a part of their society. One may sit and observe a certain culturefor years and yet never really know for sure what they believe is important to their society andculture.In the !Kung Bushman culture it is tradition for one of its members to slaughter an ox for the entire community to share and feast upon during Christmas. They follow the feast with danceand celebrations. In order for Richard to be able to show appreciation for all of their cooperationand insight they have given him throughout the three years he spent with them to be the member to slaughter the best ox he could find. He spent a great deal of effort trying to find the best oxthat would be big enough for all to eat on. He finally found an ox that would sufficiently feed theentire community for Christmas and their festive celebrations. After seeing this ox, the Bushmen people laughed at his prize ox. One woman even asked him “Do you expect us to eat that bag of bones?” (Lee, 1969). They scolded him for buying such an “old” and “thin” ox. He was veryconfused because he thought it was enormous and would definitely feed all that would be at thecelebration. He was soon the “talk of the town.” This made Richard feel as if he had ruined their holiday traditions and his own holiday by supplying the group with little to feast upon.     Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us. Although neither Gideon nor I was mortally injured, I did suffer from a nick from an arrow piercing near my ear.     Differences in Cultural Beliefs are an idea that is continually portrayed throughout the ballad-structured poem. External rhyming is used when ‘Father was a Noonucal man’ while ‘Mother was of Peewee clan,’ which is presenting that they are both from different tribes. Thus, they do not share the same beliefs and traits. Father’s ‘totem was the carpet snake/ whom none must ever slay’ whilst the mother shared the ‘daring view that carpet snakes were nothing but a pest.’ Illustrated here is juxtaposition comparing the Mothers daring view of carpet snakes to father’s opposing sacred belief of them. Furthermore, their cultural differences construct a tense mood where each others thoughts and ideas do not accord within the family.
