East Jordan High School Should Give Students Less Homework

Homework- schoolwork that a student is required to do at home, work or study done in preparation for a certain event or situation.” Most students understand why they get homework at school, but not why they get homework in every class every day. The purpose of homework is “helping to prepare students for national and statewide exams and tests. It helps to reinforce what’s being taught in the classroom” (Raychelle Cassada Lohmann- teen angst). High school students now-a-days get way too much homework to keep up with all of it with sports, other school work, and family/friends. The point is- East Jordan High School must give their students less homework due to the negative social,educational, and emotional impact.
To begin, East Jordan High School must give students less homework because it it can have a negative impact on students socially. Too much homework makes students unable to attend events because they have too much work to do for the next day. If you go to any of the sporting events, you can clearly tell that there are more students attending on Fridays, because they have the whole weekend to work on their homework. Also less school spirit because students don't have time to go to events because they have
too much homework or they don't have time to pick out clothes/costumes for spirit week. As student become older, they start to do less of the spirit weeks. No free time is another impact on students because of too much homework because they have to get their homework done so they don't have time to do fun stuff or spend time with family/friends. Too much homework can have an impact on students socially because they can't attend events, have less school spirit, and have no free time.
Another reason East Jordan High School must give students less homework because it can have a negative impact on students educationally. Too much homework makes students unable to study for upcoming test/quizzes because they don’t have the time too. You can see how much the difference makes when students have time to truly study. Being overwhelmed with too much homework can make it harder to concentrate and get their homework done by always thinking about the homework you still have to do. And lastly, it affects the purpose of homework. Because of the limited amount of time, students will just look up the answers online instead of actually trying to do it on their own or just not do it. I hear students say that they need to look up some of the answers for the homework because they didn’t have time to finish it all the night before. Students being unable to concentrate, study for tests and quizzes, and abusing the purpose of homework are reasons students must get less homework.
East Jordan High school must give students less homework because it can also have a negative impact on students emotionally.
Too much homework can affect students emotionally by the stress, the chance of depression and how overwhelming it is. It can make the student stressed which makes them unhappy, sad or depressed. Homework can also cause depression which can make them less social with their friends and family. They can become very anti-social. Too much homework can be very overwhelming. Being too overwhelmed can cause the students to be unable to focus during class and will have them always thinking about all the homework and projects/papers they have to do that night. Too much homework can affect students by stress, depression and being
overwhelming.
Finally, The negative social, educational, and emotional impact are reasons East Jordan High School must give students less homework. Students understand that changing the amount of homework we get each day would be very hard to change. As a member of the school board, it is your responsibility to help your students achieve more in high school. One solution for having too much homework is having the last 10 minutes at the end of each class to work on our homework from that class or any other school work they have(projects or studying). Or have 2 hours of Learning Lab in our EDP classes, not just 1. Most students in the A-B Lab don’t work on school work any ways. So, everyone can get all or most of their homework before they get home. If the school board did something to make the amount of homework students get less, more students could attend sports events and grades could rise due to the extra time in class we get to finish school work.
