Dynamic Character In Pearl Buck's The Good Earth
In Pearl Buck's, The Good Earth, more dynamic characters come into play throughout the book. O-lan takes the role of an obedient yet strong-minded housewife who was a former slave and is now controlled by her husband, Wang Lung. In this position she doesn't have much of a choice in her actions or decisions and remains loyal to Wang Lung. Her passive behavior causes a lack of emotion and dialogue in the book. Due to this absence of context, she remains a flat character. Although little is known about O-lan’s thoughts, throughout the book small glimpses of her past are shown which give an overall greater meaning, and importance, to her character.
O-lan has shown herself as someone with a low self esteem, who views herself as unlovable and worthless. Hence, she feels, as what she has to think isn't important. Instead of bringing attention to herself, O-lan will be carrying out actions in the background to prevent upsetting her husband. This causes O-lan to be

Through her actions and dialogue, it was able to display how she was keeping the family grounded. Her rash yet beneficial decisions allowed her to be the rock of the family and keep them together. When the family was in need of money and they were in the south they as well as many other families raided the homes of the rich. Wang Lung was able to get enough gold for them to move back to the land. Then, Wang Lung felt a lump inbetween O-lan’s breasts. It turned out to rag that was tied and when he opened it and saw of pile of jewels. O-lan explained how she saw “... a brick loosened in the wall and I slipped there carelessly so no other soul could see and demand a share.” (Buck 145) Nothing was mentioned of O-lan even debating on going to the rich man’s house. Her discrete actions show how she’s always putting family first. Plus her not telling Wang right away shows how she doesn't feel the need to brag nor spend it again showing how she keeps the family in

So far in East of Eden by John Steinbeck the story has actually resonated with me quite well, Adam and Charles are what I see as a split manifestation of who I feel I am right now. Adam is the helpless but passionate and vulnerable side of me, a loose cannon of emotion who tries to hand off the fuse to anyone willing to take it, but Charles reminds me of the impulsive and seemingly fragile side of me which actually becomes my strongest trait during times of anger or fear. I think they see it in each other too, that they have the power to destroy one another but they recognize for their sick mother they must stay civil. Given that I’ve said that Adam and Charles are a split of one personality who is to say that we don’t all have the power within…

In The Good Earth, the introduction states that “The Good Earth endures because it reminds, once again, that despite our differences- in language, culture, and religion- there are certain qualities that we share as humans.” (Buck viii) The Good Earth written by Pearl S. Buck is an outstanding book that portrays people in many ways. In The Good Earth, many characters have many personalities. Some can be malevolent, some can be nice, but all of the characters have different roles to fill in the novel. Buck does not create characters at random, but the character she is putting in has a specific personality and role to play. In The Good Earth, there are three characters that serve as a purpose in the book- the Poor Fool who shows a moral side of Wang Lung, a concubine named Lotus that drives the plot and deepens a conflict, and the Uncle, Wang Lung’s rival, shows a theme, extends a conflict, and surprises the reader.…

The movie Lust, Caution provides a much fuller explanation and details about what the author of book did not offer thoroughly, which is the family background of Wang Jiazhi. There is a scene in the movie that Wang is sitting in a shabby room and trying to organize her word for the wedding greetings to her father who moved oversea years ago with her little brother when she was a child. The experience of her father’s leaving at her young age leads to her fear of abandonment after she grows up, the unshakable belief that her friends and loved ones cannot be trusted. The fact that her father brought her little brother with him but left her at home creates a further belief that she is less worthy than other people and, therefore, does not deserve attention, love, or any other life’s rewards, which is called low self-esteem in the psychoanalysis. Her fear of abandonment and low self-esteem add together and form her most essential mental defense: fear of intimacy, the chronic and overpowering feeling that emotional closeness will seriously hurt or destroy her and that she can remain emotionally safe only remaining at an emotional distance from others at all times. These mental defenses of Wang appear in different areas in her personal and social life, and largely affect Wang in her processes of decision making.…
