Dr. Prinstein's Peer Relation Paper
I find the work done in Dr. Prinstein's Peer Relation Lab to be very interesting. Particularly Projects ARCH and REACH are very much in line with the work that I would like to do in my future. I'm interested in prevention in youth who are at risk for mental health problems. I think the work being done in Project REACH could give much needed insight into some of the specific causes for mental illness and suicidal ideation found in adolescents. I'd enjoy the opportunity to learn more about these projects and to discuss them with you.

I was wondering if you know of any full-time research positions becoming available in the spring or summer. I'm currently a senior at the University of Rochester, studying Brain and Cognitive Science and Psychology.

William Penn was a holy man, a do-gooder by all means, who in 1681, was granted land in the New World, and set out to commence his “Religious Experiment”, with his Quaker brethren. Penn had a vision for his own utopia and would end up investing all of his assets in the newly found colony which is now Pennsylvania. Much of his money as well as other investors’ went to the process of actually acquiring the land which was one of the most crucial objectives in Penn’s plan. Because William Penn was a religious man, and because the land he acquired was already partially settled by native tribes, the financial capital needed to execute a smooth and peaceful transaction was quite enormous for the time.…

The concept of personal constructs was developed by George Kelly when he formulated the cognitive personality theory, the Personal Constructs Theory. This theory is based on the notion that individuals categorize personality and behavior of themselves or of others unfailingly; and every individual will respectively categorize the same personality and behavior differently (McAdams, 2006). Like scientists develop theories, individuals develop inner replicas of reality to explain the world that they live in. These models of reality are called constructs.…

    Peers as Leaders

Basically, I think the most important skill that one needs to be a good Peer Leader is the ability to influence others, but there are other characteristics one needs to have to be an effective Peer Leader. In order to be influential, you need to have the ability to communicate well with others. Without the ability to talk to others, how is it possible to influence and direct others in the right direction? I'm a person that has the ability to engage with others easily, so communicating about what's wrong and right with others wouldn't be a problem to me. The function of a peer leader starts with influencing others in making the right decisions when it comes to peer pressure. A good peer leader also needs to have responsibility. In my freshmen year, I thought high school was a joke to me, and I didn't wake up till around beginning of sophomore year. I knew that this was a big mistake and I was prepared to take the punishment for my poor decision. I woke up and started to bring my grades up. I've been able to maintain good grades, even while being a team member of the basketball team. Overall, I think that I am qualified to be a member of PAL, because I know that I can influence and lead these kids towards the right path. I try my best to accomplish my objectives and know how to balance my priorities.…

I think that the toothpick bridge project is a way of us students to learn what it is like to understand bridges and the forms and sizes they have. From this project I can learn about how the truss bridge really works and also see how much it can carry. Knowing about bridges can help a lot in geometry because bridges consist of shapes and measurements. Maybe one day we have to do a bridge project there and luckily for me I would already know about…

    social bond theory

Social bond theory was created by Travis Hirschi and it is a form of social control theory. Social control theorists are more interested in explaining why someone is not being deviant rather than why they are. In this theory it is expected that deviance will occur at some point. Hirschi's social bond theory explains that deviane is expected to occur because crime is easy to do; you do not need any special skills to commit crimes. Everyone has the same amount of motivation to participate in deviance. Social bond theory is made up of four bonds; attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief. Each bond is a bond to conformity and that keeps individuals from doing deviant behavior. Hirschi argues that the strength of social control a person has is what differentiates people who committ offenses from those who do not.…

William Deresiewicz makes compelling suggestions in his article "Faux Friendship." His ideas and modernized definitions on the truth behind the word "friend" makes a good argument though it is strictly through his perception and analysis. He demonstrates the idea that in this era we have changed how we perceive one another from the way it use to be. Deresiewicz uses a claim of value in his article, evaluating the diminishing bond of what we call a friend in today's society. He implies that the word is loosely used and has lost it's worth. When something is plentiful and everyone has many, the value of that item goes down. Just as the number of friends everyone has on Facebook has risen, those we call "friends" has extended to acquaintances, friend of a friend, or someone we would like to meet.…
