There are so many opportunities in this field such as the opportunity to work all around the world and with government funding, the field will continue to be rewarding for workers. An article written for the University of St. Thomas says “Forbes magazine recently ranked Geology at #7 on its list of the most valuable college majors and the job outlook for geoscientists is projected at faster than average for 2010-2020 by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.” (Why) There are so many more people going into the field and it would make no sense for the government not to fund this discipline because it is growing and will continue to grow and will bring in great results, discoveries, and money for the government. The aforementioned Drew Scherer says “Contrary to popular belief, geology has the highest job security and highest wages of any natural science overall.” (Scherer) Geology is a great job and so it only seems right that the government takes this discipline that is already growing, gives it funds and allows to grow. This is an illusion portrayed by the coaches and teachers who promote athleticism over academics. Plato’s “The Allegory of the cave” shows us that “chains” and “shadows” keeps one from being enlightened, just like these young African-Americans. Henry Louis Gates Jr’s “Delusions of Grandeur” tells how this illusion “chains” down the African-American youth to a mindset of professional sports. Gates illuminates the devastating effects of the “shadows” being cast and “chains” being imposed on African-American minds keeping them in a “cave” of ignorance and keeping them unenlightened to the possibilities around them.…
