Division and Classification Essay A championship football team consists of many key components. There is no one thing, or one player, that can make or break a team’s success. If properly combined, all of these components can form an unstoppable unit. Although there is no one player alone that can cause a football team to be successful, the quarterback may be the most important and influential of all. A quarterback is the leader, the captain, and the general of a football team both on and off the field. He commands the offense on a play-to-play basis, given that he has the ball in his hands play after play. They get all of the glory, along with all of the blame. Take the Indianapolis Colts for example; they were one of the most consistent teams in the NFL. They made appearances in the playoffs year after year and even won a Super Bowl with their star quarterback Peyton Manning leading the way. However, their star quarterback underwent neck surgery early this year and has been unable to play. Without him leading the helm, the Indianapolis Colts have not won a game this season, going 0-8. This should provide an example to all of how important a quarterback is to a team. However important a quarterback is, he would be able to do next to nothing with giant defensive lineman in his face every play. This is where the offensive linemen come in. They are big, burly men with an unnatural ability to push people around. The offensive lineman’s main priorities are to protect the quarterback at all costs and to open up holes for the running back to run through. Good offensive linemen are a must for any offense that hopes to move the ball efficiently. The workhorse for all offenses is the running back. He must put his heart into every play, whether he is carrying the ball, running a pass route, or pass blocking for the quarterback. A good running back is deadly. He will get nearly 30 carries a game and account for a great chunk of the offense’s

It has often been stated in the Nation Football League that offense sells tickets while defense wins championships. That being said most teams implore either some version of the 3-4 schemes or the 4-3 schemes. While both defenses consist of a seven man front (7 players within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage) and used primarily to shut down opposing offenses running games we will examine the two to see which one is overall more effective in our guest to reach the promise land.…

Not only am I a fan of NFL football but more so I’m a fan of strong, effectual leaders. Sure I really enjoy the big plays, the big hits, and the long bomb in the last seconds of the game that scores the winning touchdown. Most of all, though, I admire the leadership principles that pervade the sport. You’ll hear these principles touted in many of the interviews with the best coaches and players throughout the league.…

At 5 ft. 11 in. and 199 pounds, Marcus Trufant is an average-size NFL defensive back (DB). Those stats don't stand out in a league where more than 500 players weighed 300-plus pounds at the 2006 training camps. But a DB's mass combined with his speed -- on average, 4.56 seconds for the 40-yard dash -- can produce up to 1600 pounds of tackling force, according to Timothy Gay, a physics professor at the University of Nebraska and author of The Physics of Football.…

McCoy, a former offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos knows how to win; he helped the Broncos to their second-highest win total in franchise history as they went 13-3 and entered the playoffs as the number one seed in the AFC. So, it is easy to say that McCoy knows how to win. McCoy’s former team members refer to him as a “good leader” who has been able to incorporate the leadership qualities of his mentors and former leaders. In the words of Ian Rapoport, “Gone are Coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith. In came a slew of new, young, fresh faces roaming the halls, trying to bring what had been one of the NFL 's oldest teams back into the mix.” (Rapoport,…

What really shines when you watch Mayfield is his competitive fire, leadership, and will to do whatever it takes to win . (If you need an example, watch this.) Teammates love this from a quarterback. I know many football players are quite jealous of the quarterbacks. How come he gets so much protection? Why can't I slide when I'm about to get killed? You don't see this in Mayfield’s game, and that's why I really love the guy. When the game is on the line, he finds another gear and carries the team to victory. When you need an extra yard, he lowers his shoulder. When the team needs a spark, he riles up the troops. He just plays with a unbridled passion for the game, and it really rubs off on his teammates. He is a huge reason why I believe the Sooners will win it all, but there are still a lot more cogs that make this Oklahoma machine…

When football first started as a sport, teams were being built around a tough, solid defense that would take pride in hitting players so hard that the ball would get pried loose causing a turnover. Now teams are forgetting about the hard hitting players and are drafting all-star receivers and deep throwing quarterbacks. Part of this is because of the media and part of it is because of the rulebook (Easterbrook). More and more people are starting to watch the NFL and because of that organizations are starting to care more about their fans…

Sports are an intimate part of many people’s lives. Without it, many of us would not share certain relationships or bonds with people who like it as much as we do. Football is indeed my favorite sport to watch. From the touchdown dances to seeing a favorite player break a record, football is intense, exciting, and amusing to watch. Football teams can define the character of certain regions and places (Sports and Recreation, 2004). In good old Minnesota, we “bleed purple” and love our Minnesota Vikings. Although the Vikings have never won the Super Bowl, we still love them regardless because of their hard work and dedication to the sport and to the fans. The whole organization behaves in a manner that keeps the fans coming back for more, as do other National Football League teams around the United States. The National Football League and its teams need to have spot-on organizational skills. If there is not proper organizational…

The Titans, isn’t just a football team. In Greek mythology, the Titans were greater even than the Gods themselves, the rule the universe with absolute power and that power, is teamwork. I tell you when my team was a mess at football camp, I told them I don’t care if they are white, black, green, blue, yellow or orange they will bunk in the same room, sit on the same bus and eat in the same lunch hall! Concussions in Football

The quarterback drops back into the pocket and begins looking down field towards his receivers. One of the defensive linemen breaks through the offensive line and the quarterback quickly throws the ball away, but not before he is slung to the ground. As the quarterback lands on the ground, his head cracks back and hits the turf with tremendous force; and despite wearing a protective football helmet, the quarterback suffers a severe concussion. Concussions happen weekly in the NFL to players of all positions due to the tremendous force these players are hit with weekly and need to be noted more carefully. The short and long term effects of multiple concussions can be devastating to the human mind. Not only does the brain suffer long term physical damage, players often suffer from long term mental problems. So what is the NFL doing about this? Surprisingly enough, very little.…

The average football fan may assume that football is an attractive, prestigious, and glorifying sport when seen on television. Little does the average fan know the mental toughness, criticism, and commitment it takes to play on Saturdays. Every year college football programs pride themselves on their recruiting classes of twenty or more high school athletes. Four years later, the same class of twenty highly touted high school athletes will usually be cut down to five or ten players. Players usually transfer if they’re not playing, fail out of school, or simply quit because they are incapable of handling the mentally exhausting year-round schedule. It is because of this that it is imperative to have a coach that is willing to help the players get through the difficult times a collegiate football player experiences.…
