Discrimination against Homosexuals Everyone is prejudice in some way or another. People are taught at a very young age to discriminate against others. Whether it is because of race, religion, sexuality, gender, age, personality or way of life, everyone pre-judges. Experiencing uprising discrimination lately are homosexuals.
Anti gay/lesbian discrimination tends to be particularly brutal and nasty. Homosexuals are victims of prejudice for multiple reasons. Homosexuality contradicts some religious beliefs such as the traditional family (man, wife and child), and unusual behavior. They come across problems with getting married, getting jobs, receiving and giving education, adoption and much more.
Bahamians often use words associated with homosexuality as standard insults, reinforcing the conception that it is highly undesirable to be gay. This can silence young people who are experiencing gay feelings and prevent them from revealing their sexuality, and even encourage young gay men to pretend to be heterosexual and join in homophobic taunts to protect themselves.
Many gay and lesbian adults who began to identify themselves as 'different' in their school years say that the absence of support, understanding, and/or information was sometimes a source of distress in itself and often magnified their anxieties.
There are many different ways in which homosexual people experience homophobia, including malicious gossip, name-calling, intimidating looks, internet bullying, vandalism and theft of property, discrimination at work, school and the community, isolation and rejection, sexual assault, or in some countries, being sentenced to death. All forms of homophobia are destructive, not just for people living openly as a homosexual, but for society as a whole. Living in a homophobic environment forces many homosexuals to conceal their sexuality, for fear of the negative reactions and consequences of coming out.
