Destructive Transendence: an Intrepretation of Edgar Allan Poe
Imagine growing up in a world for decades, only to find out that reality has all been a lie. The foundation of any individuals’ existence on the planet Earth has been for no specific purpose and it has become necessary to destroy the very fabric of the physical and spiritual realms in order to return to genuine tranquility. Edgar Allan Poe, a very popular American author, believes in a unique philosophy that advocates these principles mentioned called Destructive Transcendence. Destructive Transcendence is the belief that in order to return to original unity, the physical world and the spiritual world must both be destroyed. Poe used this concept in many of his writings and its evident the influence it had on his stories due to the contextual clues and obvious characteristics illustrated. Poe’s writings occurred during the Romantic Movement and greatly influenced the literary spectrum by developing a new genre of writing (detective fiction) as well as motivating modern day writers such as the famous Arthur Doyle and his Sherlock Holmes series. Edgar Allan Poe’s use of Destructive Transcendence in “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “Ligeia” conveys the idea of the physical world and the spiritual world conflicting on the outskirts of reality to unite as one through the use of insanity, symbolism, imagery, and diction. To begin with, the use of insanity in Poe’s works is a prominent indication of the disintegrating reality experienced by the characters. Consequently, this characteristic of insanity foreshadows the emergence of original unity by destroying the psychological state of the character as well as his or her physical surroundings. To clarify, in “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Roderick is the individual that experiences insanity in the highest degree throughout the story and the concept of Destructive Transcendence materializes.     Poe characterizes Roderick with having a mental illness early in the story. In the letter to the narrator it states, “The MS. have evidence of nervous agitation. The writer spoke of acute bodily illness-of a mental disorder which oppressed him” (2). Roderick explains to the narrator about his illness through a letter in order to get the narrator to visit him. The mental illness is also shown, with the toll it partakes on Roderick’s physical appearance. The narrator describes him when he is younger with having, “an eye large, liquid, and luminous beyond comparison” to a more recent description of having, “ghastly pallor of the skin” (4). Poe adds more vivid descriptions about the character and compares his appearance from his earlier years. The traits of the past were more lively comparatively to the more recent characterization. The words “luminous” and “ghastly” are vast contradictions in his appearance. “Luminous” describes the bright light in his life while “ghastly” describes the frightful death within Roderick. The death description allows to show the formation from a healthy person to unhealthy with a mental illness. Lastly, Roderick talks to the narrator about the conceivement of the disease itself.     In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Edgar Allen Poe uses the character of Montresor to show how letting anger and resentment fester over time leads to tragedy. Montresor, who is careful and calculating, vows to take revenge on Fortunado, who has injured him somehow over a long period of time. He states that he will be avenged “at length,” meaning that he has carefully planned out his tactics (Poe 61). “Furthermore, Montressor vows to “punish with impunity,” and committing his crime in the catacombs more or less ensures his success (Poe 61). Secondly, Montresor’s festering resentment has possibly caused him mental instability. He wildly echoes Fortunado’s screams as he builds the wall in the catacombs (Poe 67). Then as Fortunado, chained to the wall, finally falls silent, Montressor appears to hesitate, stating that his “heart grew sick,” but in the end places the last brick in the wall, indicating that he is comfortable with his act of murder (Poe 68). Finally, though Poe never states clearly what Fortunado did to Montresor, he does indicate that Montresor is unhappy, which contributes to his decision to kill Fortunado. As they walk through the catacombs, Montresor states at one point that Fortunado is happy, as he once was (Poe 64). He then indicates that the Montresors were once a “great and numerous family” (Poe 64). In conclusion, Poe reaches into the depths of the human mind to show what heinous acts people are capable of when pushed to extremes; if Montresor had not let his anger fester over time, it is possible that he may have been able to find another, peaceful way to resolve his conflict with Fortunado.…
