Definition Essay: Whart It Means to Be an American
Doris Morales Professor Benavidez To be an American means to follow your goals and dreams. As cliché as that may sound, the United States is the land of the free. Of course it’s not free to live here financially but it’s free in the sense you can become whoever you want to be. For example, a doctor, a lawyer, or a business owner. My parents came to the United States about 25 years ago to have a better life. My parents were born in El Salvador. About 25 years ago they came to the U.S. because they knew they had no future in their country. They each come from large families. My dad has 9 siblings and my mom has 12. They both grew up very poor and it was hard to grow up with so many siblings and no money. When the older siblings started coming to the U.S. my mom and dad decided to cross the border themselves. My mom’s main reason was to give her son from a previous marriage a better life. My parents met each other when they were here in the U.S. They had two other children, my sister and me, and to this day have given us the best lives they have been able to. They have worked very hard to give my sister and I everything that we ever needed. They did not want us to grow up the way they did. My parents always tell me to work hard I will be able to become whatever I want to be in life. They tell me to take advantage of the opportunity I have living in this country. My parents hard work and accomplishments have taught me that I can do whatever I set my mind to do. At this time I am not sure what I want my career to be but I know I want to be successful. Everyone wants to be successful but not everyone is willing to work hard to be successful. My parents have taught me that the key to become successful is to work hard. In the end my goal is to work hard, become successful, and to repay my parents somehow for their hard work. Following my goals and dreams makes me an American. I live in a country that has so many opportunities for me to be the best person

To be an American, means to have freedom over one’s own life. In this country of ours we are blessed to be able to express ourselves through freedom of speech without punishment. Because of our constitution, not only do we have the right to express our own individual beliefs with freedom of speech, but we are also able to practice our own religions, bear arms, and enforce the press, letting us receive news about the government itself. This is truly what it means to be an American. To be individual, and live your own life the way you choose…

When asked the question “what is an american?”, almost every single person would provide a different answer. This question is very open ended, and there are infinite possibilities for a response. Being an american is not something that can be decided by a few physical criterion, it is something more. To be an american is, according to Patricia Fernandez, “a state of mind,” based on a person’s beliefs rather than their tangible features. Therefore, I believe that an American is someone who considers America to be their home, believes in freedom and equality for all people regardless of race, social status, gender, or ethnicity, and is loyal and supportive to the United States.…

What does it mean to be an American, to me it means that I have certain rights and freedoms that nobody can take away from me unless I deserve them to be taken. Most people believe that being an american means that you can get away with doing whatever you want because they have freedom of speech or the rights to do it, but sometimes those rights don’t apply and to me that seems like they are just trying to take advantage of what everyone believes what being an American means. Being an American means that you have more privileges than most countries do and people take that for granted.…

To be an American it means you will obtain rights, for example, the 2nd amendment states you have the right to bare arms. What being an American means to me is that I have the rights to do anything. Even though we are able to have all of these rights doesn’t mean we are able to take advantage of them there are still consequences for our actions. All the people in the Navy, Army, Air-force etc have the job to protect us, not everyone who shoots people just because. Being an American to me means being respectful to everyone. Like what Harry S Truman said, “you know that being an American is more than a matter of where your parents came from. It is a belief that all men are created equally and that everyone deserves an even break.” Being an American means to be brave loyal and kind to everyone no matter what. We…
