“Deep Down Popular”
By: Phoebe Stone

“Deep Down Popular” by Phoebe Stone is about a tomboy, Jesse Lou, who is about to spend a lot of time with her crush, Conrad Parker Smith. The setting of this story takes place in the small southern town of West Taluka Falls, Virginia.

Jesse Lou is a sixth grader who enjoys writing poems to the boy she loves, Conrad Parker Smith, the most popular boy in her school. Jessie Lou has been in love with Conrad since the second grade. Conrad has tons of friends while Jesse Lou has friends when she wants to. During the beginning of the school year, Conrad’s leg begins to weaken so he starts to wear a leg brace. Since he has a leg brace, Conrad is not able to play soccer anymore and has to quit. His popularity drops down, and he can’t keep up with any of his friends anymore. Jesse Lou and Conrad live close to each other, so Jesse Lou’s teacher asks her to help Conrad home everyday. At first, Jessie Lou is very shy, but the more she hangs out with him, she becomes more comfortable. Jesse Lou, Conrad, and fourth grader Quentin Duster start to spend more time together almost everyday. They all get involved to save Bailey’s Hardware from the Big Box store which us going to open up near the town. While this is all occurring, Jesse Lou hopes that Conrad will keep limping.

Spending all this time with Conrad is Jesse Lou’s dream come true. However when Conrad’s leg brace comes off and is able to play soccer again, everything changes. Conrad’s popularity is about to come back while Jesse Lou stays the same.

The overall tone of the book is touching and serious because Jesse Lou really likes Conrad and is able to spend time with him. It’s about real feelings of real kids. My reaction so far to the book is sad because when Jesse Lou finds out that Conrad doesn’t need his leg brace anymore, her heart breaks. She knows he’s going to become popular again and possibly forget her.

My opinion that this book was a little sad because Kevin (also known as Freak) had a disease that made him stop growing at three feet so he had to wear metal leg braces and crutches. Also in the beginning Max was a bully because in the beginning of the story Max was called Kicker because whoever touched him Max will hurt that person by punching and kicking him/her. The book also talks a lot about friendship and trust because when Freak and Max first saw each it was only for one afternoon and that afternoon they barely talked to each other but once years have passed, some how Freak moved next to Max’s emptied neighbors house (the only reason the house was empty because the old neighbor was still in jail) So after Freak got out…

Min’s best friends Bonnie and Liza were also at the bar the night that David and Min split. Bonnie is the cute, petite, blonde haired, optimistic friend who believes in real life fairytales and love at first sight, while Liza on the other hand is a taller, voluptuous, red head, that is more of a cynical realist when it comes to love, relationships, and pretty much everything else. While at the bar Liza catches Min eyeing up a group of three men and encourages her to go talk to them and bring them over to the bar area where the ladies are sitting. On the walk over to go talk to the men, Min over hears the man who caught her eye, better known as Calvin Morisse, often referred to as Cal, making a bet that he could get her into bed in a month. What Min found out was that he was making the bet with David, and the bet was worth ten thousand dollars. Not to Min’s knowledge, Cal does not believe he made the bet but makes a counter offer that he could get Min to leave the bar with him and go to dinner. This bet was worth ten dollars. As the school year progresses Charlotte avoids any relationship with Miss Hancock which saddens her and hinders her teaching confidence.
