Declaration of Independance
In the midst of strong debate, we hereby declare independence from the atrociousness of five days of strenuous schoolwork. School should only last four days per week. We should be let free of school at least three days per week which include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We need freedom from schools and need some sort of break from it. Sometimes we need some time to digest the information we have been taught from the previous school week. School should only last four days per week. It can be hard for us to consistently give our best effort in school if there is not a longer weekend. It can be difficult for us to wake up early in the morning, before there is light outside, and efficiently work for seven hours at school. A longer weekend can help us gain more sleep time and relax from our previous week at school. Some of us may use this extra break to catch up on school work. Sometimes we may need a longer weekend to go on small vacations. A longer weekend can us time to pursue a job to earn some extra money for the many things that us teenagers must have. A longer weekend gives us more time to make choices on our own, instead of always being instructed by the school system. The school system has made our work ethic decrease by forcing us, by law, to attend school five days per week. The school system has taken away from our sleep time and declares that we must be at school by a certain time, or else consequences will be issued. The school system has taken away numerous times for students and families to take a break. Sometimes students miss funerals and weddings due to the lengthy school week. The school system has cheated students on earning money by not giving them a real

Schools looking to save energy and money investigate the four-day school week as a possible solution because although it probably would not use up less energy, it would certainly help in saving some money. One issue with saving energy is that on the fifth day, most schools would still remain open for sporting events, community gatherings, tutoring or other extracurricular activities (Work). The schools would save money on the wages of the cafeteria workers and bus drivers who were not needed on Fridays (Work). However, those people would be angry because that is how they make their living and take care of their families. Cutting salaries could negatively affect the standard of living for the area, making it less appealing to new families.…

Our repeated Petitions for redress of grievances have been answered only by repeated injury. That whenever any institution or school board districts from these, ends the duty of the students to throw off the terrors of homework and to provide new methods. Frequent breaks in the school year allow students and teachers to recharge themselves, be more active in class, and have higher academic achievement. Students and teachers can get tired if they have ongoing class for ten months without a break big enough to recharge. Some of the illnesses that people could have fought off when they were fully rested could make them sick and make more people absent (edweek.org). Although summer vacation may be fun, having frequent breaks in the school year can help students retain their knowledge and have higher academic achievement (nea.org). It can be enough that kids have 8 hours of school each day doing classwork, learning, taking quizzes, test, notes, and so much more - now they even have to do homework after school. On the usual students get assigned homework that takes (some of us) at least 3.2 hours in one day. Weekly it’s usually 14 hours. Other kids take more than 3 hours to finish their homework just for one day. That’s too much homework taking away precious time from our lives. NOT to count in how much more time we spent getting ready, eating, doing after school activities, doing chores, and making up…

Fifty percent of teachers say that schools should be no more than 5 hours. Ninety- three percent of the teachers even commented on how they could see “damaged pupils’ abilities to concentrate (Ratcliffe)”; therefore, the school day is too long.…
