Dead Man's Path
DEAD MAN'S PATH by CHINUA ACHEBE

The title of this story "Dead Man's Path" foreshadows the series of events about to take place in the story. "Dead Man's Path" does not only refer to the ancestral pathway but also refers to Obi's choice of action. His "path" by not compromising has made him a "Dead Man". Dead in this context is not death, but is referring to his failure. His dream died. The title also foreshadows dark events that would occur in the story. Meaning this story has quite a sad ending to it, not at all a happy story. In this story "Dead Man's Path", Chinua Achebe gives the protagonist Michael Obi, a 26 years old secondary school teacher, a great chance of fulfilling his dream. He was appointed by the Mission Authorities to be the headmaster of Ndume Central School in Nigeria. "Mission Authorities" (page 618) are Christian Missionaries who were also the authorities in Africa. They are foreigners who have been sent everywhere around the world to teach Christianity. This is actually a foreshadowing that this story will touch on religion and beliefs. The Mission Authorities might have sent a "modern" man like Obi to this backward school to teach the people there about Christianity as Obi said; "Our duty is to teach your children to laugh at such ideas." (page 620). He, with the support of his wife Nancy, wants to make everything in the school perfect and modern. They decided to plant a garden, unfortunately, across and ancient footpath used by the natives he is supposed to teach. Michael Obi portrays the modern culture with his disbelief of superstitions unlike the antagonists, which are the villagers led by the village head priest. The point of conflict is introduced at Paragraph 12 "One evening as Obi was admiring his work, he was scandalized to see an old woman from the village hobble right across the compound, through the marigold flower-bed and the hedges." Although explained by a teacher that this footpath is vital to the villagers, Obi

While this is a great point, the missionaries eventually pull Igbo people into their own culture, breaking some traditions. The people who did not fully agree with the Igbo traditions decide to break away and confirm to Christianity. For example, Nwoye, Okonkwo’s son, does not believe in certain rules and is interested in Christianity. A couple years into Okonkwo’s exile, Obierika stumbles upon Nwoye among the missionaries in Umuofia. Obierika decides to visit Okonkwo for an explanation. “He finds that Okonkwo does not wish to speak about Nwoye. It is only from Nwoye’s mother that he hears scraps of the story” (Achebe 144). Okonkwo believes Nwoye is a disgrace to the family and never wishes to speak of his “womanly” self again. Due to the Europeans converting members of the Igbo clan to Christianity, they are forced to change their cultural traditions. As Obierika said, “it is too late, our own men and our sons have joined the ranks of the stranger” (Achebe 176). These illustrations display the conditions for questioning and constructive change of violent traditions are present in the Igbo society (Hoegberg 60), but simply from the amount of time and new actions interfering with their own culture putting them in…

Obi accepted this new responsibility enthusiastically, and had many visions and wonderful ideas that he could not wait to put into practice. What set him apart was that he had somewhat more education than other headmasters in the field, and he was more modern and open-minded. Obi's wife had hopes and ideas as well. She wished to create a beautiful garden around the school. Both he and his wife put their all into the "backward" school. Obi worked on setting the high standards for the school, and his wife worked on her dream-garden with the beautiful hibiscus and the brilliant allamanda flowers. As they say "All good things must come to an end," Obi's end became near one day as he met with the village priest of Ani. There was a path by the school that Michael Obi did not want the villagers to be passing through for he thought that the villagers may use the school room for "pagan ritual during the inspection." The priest decided to speak with Obi on the matter of the path. He explained its importance to the village saying, "This path was here before you were born, and before your father was born. The whole life of the village depends on it. Our dead relatives part by it and our ancestors visit us by it. But most important, it is the path of children coming in to be born…" Obi's response to the old man's statement was, "The whole purpose of our school such beliefs as that. Dead men do not require footpaths. The whole idea is just fantastic. Our duty is to teach your children to laugh at such ideas." With that Michael Obi dismissed what the old man had said and he did not unblock the path by the school. The next morning he woke up in the ruins of his work. A school building was pulled down, and the beautiful…

The path blood take from the right femoral vein to lower lobe of the right lung via the pulmonary artery is as follows; we start in the right femoral vein which is located in the thigh and travel to the right external iliac vein. Blood from the femoral vein emptiness in the inferior vena cava but first must travel through the external iliac. The iliac vein joins with the inferior vena cava. The inferior vena cava takes deoxygenated blood form the lower limbs of the body to the right atrium (Thibodeau, Patton, 2008.). Following the inferior vena cava we travel in to the right atrium of the heart. The purpose of right atrium of the heart is to receive deoxygenated blood from the body through the inferior vena cava and pump it into the right ventricle (MedicineNet.com, 2012). Once we are ready to leave the right atrium we go into the right AV valve (AV is atrioventricular or cuspid, (Thibodeau, Patton, 2008.).The AV valve stops blood from flowing backwards and every time the heart beats the valve opens and closes. The AV valve allows blood to flow into the right ventricle. But before blood goes into the right ventricle it has to travel through the tricuspid valve. The tricuspid valve along with AV and SL are all structures that prevent blood from flowing backwards (Thibodeau, Patton, 2008.). So we now know that the right ventricle receives deoxygenated blood from the right atrium, but what we don’t already know is that the right ventricle sends the... [continues]…

Have you ever wonder why they built borders? Or who built them? Or who prevents and controls illegals from crossing, and what they do to accomplish them from crossing? Immigration in America has been a topic of intense debate through American history. Americans seem to always want to single “immigrants” out as being a bad guy per say, and the border patrol as good guys. Is it really fair to make that judgment based just on history? I sure do not think so. There’s more to immigrants then there history, there’s a reason why they come to America and it is not always intended for evil. Believe it or not, after reading The Devils Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea, immigrants are the good guys just asking for another chance at life. While the Border Patrol Officers are just wearing that uniform and taking advantage of it. Not coming to an agreement, Luis Alberto Urrea’s nonfiction novel would actually enrich the debate on illegal immigration due to the reasoning’s Urrea gives us on these walkers wanting to come to America.…

After some time, the village priest visited Mr.Obi and told him that the path was a sacred one by which the dead departed and the new babies arrived. Hearing this, Mr. Obi told the priest that he didn't want any students at the school to believe the priest's religion, but tried to compromise and open a new path, behind the school. But, the priest refused. A few days later, a woman died during childbirth, supposedly because the child could not arrive through the barricades. Outraged, the villagers formed a riot, tore up the flower beds and knocked down one of the school buildings. Unfortunately, a school inspector came to overlook the school on the very same day and Mr. Obi got a bad report about the school.…

In the story, Dead Mens Path, the beliefs between modern thinking and religious beliefs clash together between a transfer teacher and a native priest. Different points of views come to pass and while the two men believe that one is right and one is wrong, is actually false. Modern thinking and religious beliefs both have their own time and place, and while it may seem strange, both can be right. Michael Obi, the transfer teacher, argues that the only way people should live their lives, is to follow more closely to logic, rather than go with beliefs and superstitions. Mr. Obi says in the story “The whole purpose of our school is to eradicate just such beliefs as that. Dead men do not require footpaths. The whole idea is just fantastic. Our duty is to teach your children to laugh at such ideas.”(Achebe 45). Mr. Obi strongly believes in the following of modern logic and thinking. On the other hand, the village priest argues that religious and beliefs should be followed closely because they have governed people’s lives since the very beginning. The priest explains to Mr. Obi, “What you say may be true, but we follow the practices of our fathers. If you reopen the path we shall have nothing to quarrel about. What I always say is: let the hawk perch and let the eagle perch.”(Achebe 45). Basically, what the priest is saying, is let things stay as they have always been. Why fix what is not broken? For example, earlier on in the story, the priest tells Mr. Obi that the footpath has been there for many generations. That is where the dead depart, the ancestors visit, and childbirth is decided. In the end though, the strength of the the religious beliefs shine through with the misfortunes that happen to Mr. Obi at the end of the story. Because he blocked off the entrance and exit of the pathway, things were torn apart and destroyed and trampled over. After this happens, the government inspector shows up to grade the school premises and gives it a failing…

Alexander the third of Macedon was considered to be the great (greatest?) ruler of Asia Minor during his conquest of the Persian Empire. As an effective general, Alexander won the majority of his battles during the conquest, and created new societies for the people. His success created an expansion of the Greek empire, and conquered many lands for Alexander to be considered a great leader, and the creator of Asian civilization. Everyday people make choices such as what clothes to wear or how to style their hair. These choices are not as life changing as other choices we make that determine who we are. These can be anything like choosing whether or not to marry a person or having children. Life choices are not made by people, they are made by an individual. The choices may not be original but how they impact a person’s life is unique. Life is full of choices that must be made. “The Road Not Taken” is a consideration of the choices one must make in life.…

Obi and One Obi’s bonds with the community completely and quickly diminish when he sees a woman “hobble across the compound” on the path, and wonders why it is on his school property (270). As he confronts a teacher, Obi’s language protrudes once again as he states “it amazes me” “that you people allowed the villagers to make use of this footpath” (270). This constituent event sets up the rest of the narrative discourse, because if Obi did not see the woman he would have not noticed the path for they planted flowers and shrubbery on top of it. This path has Obi fuming, and now body emotions come forward as “he shook his head,” emphasizing even more to his disregard for the local traditions (270). Even after his brusque reaction the teacher tried to tactfully reserve some respect for the pompous fool by “apologetically” commenting on the path (270). The conversation with the teacher represents a point that Obi does not have an ignorance problem. It is strictly a blatant disregard to the history and values of the local population. With the priest being a person to obviously respect, Obi does but that. The priest reasons with Obi by stating “this path was here before you were born and before your father was born” (271). The priest is saying the path means something to us all, young and old, just as your new ways that you want to teach mean to you. Obi needsto realize that the school was built on top of the path not the other way around. Furthermore, Obi should realize that this path is part of everybody and at some day everybody will walk this path. It could easily from there be tied into educational values, and emphasis put on history and culture of the land. Obi does not understand that to sacrifice his beliefs of the path for a mutual agreement will salvage everything there is “to quarrel about” just as the priest says (271). In Thomas Mann’s short story “The Path To The Cemetery”, there are a few major themes throughout the plot. The story starts off with an elderly man named Piepsam walking along the road to the cemetery, and out of nowhere a young kid on a bike races by. The older man threatens to report this kid for riding on the path and tries to get him off of his bike by grabbing onto the seat. After the kid gets away with a blow to the old man’s chest, Piepsam goes into a blind fury yelling as many obscene phrases as he could bring to mind. As he was trying to break free from the grasp of a man who was confused about the situation his heart gave up and quit on the spot. The theme of this allegory is that people need to seize life and grasp it while they still have a chance, because once let go it does not look back.…

In order for them to do this, they had to win the people over and for them to do that; they converted the Igbo people to Christianity. Achebe did not agree with the missionaries and in his story, he tried to get the reader to emphasize with the Igbo culture. In the story, he describes every reason and purpose for every action the Igbo people did. He talked about their festivals and their traditions.
