Dark Ages Dbq Analysis
In the 1300s a scholar named Petrarch created the term "Dark Ages" for what happened in this period. I do not believe it should be called the dark ages. The term dark ages did not describe the whole time period, but only a part of it. I believe the monks kept the light of the Romans to protect. Document Ds title is "Medieval Economic Laws" and document E's were "The Rise of Universities" which shows it was a time for law, order and education. I believe Europe is in a period of growth because even though they had a great decline, they still grew a lot between 794 and 1345 AD.

I do not believe Europe was in a dark age. But I do believe that they were in a period of growth. For example, Document D discusses law and order. There was a new type of money and if any place refused to use the new currency they would be able to bring the case up to the king, only if they were a freeman. This document states that, "In all places, in all states, and in all markets the new denarii shall be exchanged as money and shall be received by all." After it talks about what happens if you refuse. Another example, in document A is they had rules for the king to prevent too much power. According to this document, "No man shall be forced to perform more service for a knight's fee, or other fee holding land, than is due from it. For example, Document B discusses a decline in trade, education, and arts. This decline lasted from about 476 to 1100 AD. This document states, "European civilization slipped back into semi barbarism." Another example, in Document D is that their punishment was unfair. According to this document, "Concerning false money, we have ordered that he who has been proved to have made it shall have his hands cut off." The evidence shows unfairness but mostly a decline that Europe suffered
