Costa Rica Narrative
It was six in the morning when we landed in San José, Costa Rica. Even though we looked like the walking dead, we felt anything but dead. We were filled with excitement from head-to-toe with .what the week would bring We hopped on buses that took us to Uvita, Costa Rica, where we would remain for the rest of the week. When we arrived at the bungalows in Uvita we were given the room arrangements. Once we got settled in we started right away with the mission work. Throughout the duration of the trip we visited people, gave out baskets filled essential items, and did some other volunteer work. The experience of seeing poverty that’s foreign to me in the United States, truly opened my eyes. Before Costa Rica the only poverty I was exposed to …show more content…
When we went to hand out Hands of Mercy Baskets and converse with the locals my eyes were opened to what people actually had. There was hardly anything within the homes. Most of the home’s floors were made out of cement, not rugs or carpets, just cement. Some of these homes did have beds or the only bed they had was an old hammock. I was completely filled with sadness knowing that these people had practically nothing and back home I would complain about things that were insignificant to what these Costa Ricans had to deal with. I think what definitely made me realize that these Costa Ricans are much better off than me, is the attitude that they carried. The locals knew that they may not be the richest people monetary status wise, but rich in happiness. They were so content with what they had and it truly made me realize how blessed I am. I realized that it’s not how much you have that defines you, it’s how happy you are with with what you have that defines you. I realized that I am beyond blessed to have the life that I have and Costa Rica made me more grateful for what I have. I was shown that these Costa Ricans are richer than what I’ll be, because of the hope and gratefulness they showed

It was about two different groups of volunteers who attended, and we supported with handing out food to the people who need it. Has a community, we cannot just sit at home and act like the things that are occurring in the society does not affect us as well. Helping the people the community and seeing how some people need these kinds of organizations shows that we as a community are doing the job. The people are part of the society, and as a college student in the Public Administration field, it showed me that to move ahead as a society we have to carry everybody along. Also, by providing these resources, it keeps many of these people out of the street; and it makes the community improve as a whole. After seeing how this organization helps the community and also hearing what people say that we the society are not helping the poor, I believe that it is…

Last Summer, I visited Costa Rica on a kayaking trip with Falling Creek, a summer camp in Tuxedo, NC. Every year, 20 or so kids get invited to the program called HUCK, where you go kayaking in places around the world. Last summer, all of the kids that were invited went to Costa Rica where we would have a great time experiencing new culture and great whitewater. The First few days were great and those were some of the most powerful, best rivers I have ever kayaked.…

Prior to this activity, I was skeptical that I would not learn anything beneficial or enlightening. After a little debate, I decided to move forward in watching the documentary Poor America. Although this was a short documentary, I felt that every second was impactful. This documentary was the perfect introduction to allow myself to develop within this series of multicultural activities. I felt engaged during the documentary because it showed several different people going through something similar that I have thankfully not had to experience in my life. Prior to this documentary, I do not believe I was aware of true poverty. A lot of the things that I had growing up I did not realize they were such a privilege. Although small, this experience as help me develop a better understanding.…

Think of what you had for breakfast, then lunch, now dinner. What if out of the three meals a day you only had the chance to have two, if that. What if you're still under the age of 13 and you had to take over the role of one parent, maybe both for the day because they work in the fields or cleaning houses to be able to pay rent and buy food. So you're stuck taking care of babies, cooking, and somehow still managing to finish your schoolwork. This is what life in the small community of Lake Worth, Florida is like. Knowing about this motivated me to get more involved and help the Guatemalan community through service.…

I’ve been on a few memorable vacations in my life, but my trip to Cozumel, Mexico was by far, the most memorable. Sure, I was on my honeymoon, so that helped make it amazing, but the sites and culture we experienced is what really made the trip. We only spent one day in Mexico because it was part of a cruise, but it was a very unforgettable and engrossing day.…

The Dominican Republic, known for its beautiful beaches and balmy weather, was the last place I ever imagined I would find myself in this past summer vacation. On this week long trip, it wasn't for the warm ocean waves or the traditional Dominican cuisine I was called to, I was called to serve the beautiful Dominican people. On the third day of the trip, instead of heading out to the worksite where we had been pouring the concrete footers of a plastics and water filter factory, I opted to travel with a group to the childrens' cancer ward in Santiago and visit the patients. We started out our visit by performing a few dances we had taught our vacation bible school and handing out fun little gift we had brought with us. We played ball with some…

This past summer I had the incredible opportunity to go on a mission trip in Ecuador where I worked in an orphanage partaking in labor work, as well as, traveled out into the cities bordering Quito to organize VBSs (vacation bible schools)in startup churches . In beginning of the trip I expected the work I would participate in would be life changing to those in its wake. My expectations were highly set and the outcome did not match up; in fact, the outcome was quite the opposite. In the short week I spent in Ecuador, I realized almost immediately that the problems that needed to be mended were much larger than a group of fifty people could overcome in one week. There was so much need, and an insufficient amount of resources to provide for it. Nevertheless, I was…

Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, a place where tourists come from all over the country to enjoy the sun, the beaches, the islands, and the coral reefs. Puerto La Cruz was a getaway for a lot of people, just some place to go on vacations and have a good time, but for me it was my home. The spring of 2014, by that time every morning when you walk outside your house you can feel the sea breeze and even when it’s cold, you close your eyes and smile, because it warms your heart. Now if I close my eyes, all I can do it’s relive that moment over and over again. The moment when only six words coming from my mom’s mouth felt like a thousand knives in my heart and changed my life forever. “We’re moving to the United States”.…

As I raise my head from the Spanish picture book, I see a room full of sparkling eyes filled with joy and sheer enthusiasm. I smile back with a warm blush, as I hear the kids' innocent laughter. It strikes me with amazement how these kids are so open to learning from me - a stranger in their land who can barely speak their language. That moment, witnessing the happiness on their faces while receiving our donated books and clothes changed the meaning of happiness in my life. It didn't just change my outlook on life; it had changed me.…

These people were malnourished, sickly, underserved, and lacking the necessities of life. I remember thinking how lucky I am to have the simple pleasures of a hot shower, shelter, clean clothing, and the ability to visit a doctor. That is the moment I knew working in an underserved community is my calling. I wanted to help these people and provide for them. I wanted to provide them the healthcare they needed. From the little girls’ single touch, to the harsh reality that many people are starving and lacking health care, this moment alone helped define my experience with underserved communities.…

In terms of healthcare, you could call Costa Rica the little country that could. Over the past seventy years the government has enacted reforms that have changed the face of both the system and health of a country. The Costa Rican health system is dedicated to providing equitable access to citizens, while protecting them from financial risk. The improvement this middle-income country has made rivals that of higher-income countries.…
