When considering opinions of both sides, I am inclined to take sides with the latter. Corporal punishment is an infringement of children 's rights. It should be forbidden in families and schools. Parents and teachers are engineers of children 's souls therefore we should always love children, be patient to them and try our best to help them to develop in a correct direction.

Corporal punishment has been practiced in many schools and families for quite a long time. In recent years, people 's attitudes towards this practice have undergone drastic changes. Nowadays, many people strongly oppose it. Should corporal punishment be abolished? The issue whether it is a useful part of discipline or an infringement of children 's rights has aroused a heated discussion all over the world. Corporal punishment is defined as the use of physical force with the intention of making children experience pain, but not injury, for purposes of correction or control of the children 's behavior (Straus, 1994, p. 4). Discipline is a training of mind and body in order to obey rules and control someone 's behavior like the law (Taylor, 2002, pp.73~77). The difference is that the law is more serious. Children 's rights basically mean that children (all human beings below the age of 18) are born with fundamental freedoms and the inherent rights of all human beings (Nicholson, Anderson, Fox & Brenner, 2002, pp. 362~371). Then, the infringement of children 's rights means somebody violated the children 's rights. Corporal punishment is an infringement of children 's rights. It should be forbidden in families and schools. This essay will discuss three major arguments which includes that corporal punishment is an uncivilized action, it hurts children physically and it hurts children psychologically. It will also show the counterarguments which contains that some children are hard to be taught, people cannot find other useful mthods to take the place of corporal punishment and the

There are many effective ways of properly punishing a disobedient student, but there are also limits to certain disciplinary measures. Bruises, cuts, and/or broken skin should not occur in the process of administering corporal punishment. The eight constitutional amendment clearly states that "no cruel or unusual punishment should be inflicted." If markings are found on a student, the boundaries and law have been broken. Rupturing these boundaries surfaces the question, "Just exactly WHY are we administering the corporal punishment to students, to hurt them?"     Some parents spank their kids when they do not listen or obey parents. However, other parents hit them without right reason such as an alcoholic parents beat them, and it can be considered child abuse. According to the article, it shows ninety percent of parents that admit to spanking when children are hit as a mean of correction. In the pros, the supporters believe spanking would stop children from misbehaving and correct their mistakes; these children would listen and obey to parents. The experts expect fifty percentages of parents that admit to spank teenagers who are between thirteen and fourteen years old. On the other hand, in the cons, spanking is considered as a child abuse, which the victim is living in fear of his or her parents. Some studies show ninety-three percentages of agreement that spanking has harmful effects to children (“Pros and Cons”). Mild spanking has an immediate compliance of the child. Every parent wants his/her child to become a successful person when he/she grows up. For example, some children are stubborn and disobedient which makes parents angry about their bad behavior. Especially, the children who are three or younger have been spanked a lot of times; parents mostly use hands to hit them on arm butt, hands, feet, or legs. Some people consider spanking helps children who are between the teenagers’ ages to understand what is right or wrong. Moreover, they can learn lessons from their parents’ advice and teaching. According to the researchers quoted by Dr. Zeidler said he was spanked when he was a little boy. He also approved, “Spanking children as needed when necessary and believes the occasional use of physical punishment-not abuse-can be an effective tool for parents” (Zeidler).     Gershoff's study, although said to support the argument of how corporal punishment should not be used, lacks to explain the different results obtained if corporal punishment where administered in a loving way with the intent to guide children in the right direction and to help them develop the correct principles in order to become good citizens in today's society.
