Conservatism

I am a Conservative because it isn't the job of the federal government to make us successful; it's the job of the federal government to create an environment that allows us to make ourselves successful.

Conservatism appeals most strongly to me because of its ideology and the effect that is has on the United States.

Each person in America subscribes to their own ideology. This consists of a body of ideas reflecting the social needs and aspirations of an individual, group, class, or culture. Conservatives believe in personal responsibility and limited government. Responsibility is a familiar theme of right-wing rhetoric, conservatives argue that people should take care of themselves. Limited Government provides citizens control on how they shape their local environment and policy, giving more citizen access to participate in society. It also grants a stronger free market system so that the citizenry have more opportunity for real, self-created success. Government should take action that everyone should have equal opportunity. Free markets managed by people create healthy sustainable competition ultimately producing better goods and services that would never ordinarily be produced by a liberal government supporting and entitled public drowning in mediocrity.

In a conservative led country, we are supporting the philosophy of our founding fathers by working hard as individuals to provide a better lifestyle for a ourselves and our family. Conservative view point isn't necessarily the right answer, but it does keep people accountable for their individual successes and failures. On the contrary, liberals and social democrats look to other peoples form of success and failures. I’d rather live in a country that values free markets, freedom of choice, and all aspects of life versus living in an environment where everyone is treated equally regardless to the success of each individual.

The description of a set of beliefs as "liberal" or "conservative" is a task that, in history, has changed in its requirements and protocol. We would now consider beliefs to be conservative that were at the onset of the American experiment considered liberal. Free markets, limited government, and federalism were ideas that were ridiculed throughout most of the civilized countries of the west up until recent history. On the other hand, what we would now consider to be modern liberalism can’t well be described in a similar fashion: Hobbes’ style of conservatism and its antidemocratic and autocratic impulses, while always the end result of collectivist tendencies such as modern liberalism, don’t translate completely into FDR’s style of governance and the Left’s penchant for social democracy (though Hobbes would appreciate the control that central planning entails). Modern liberalism, like modern conservatism, can be traced to a form of liberal thought. In modern liberalism’s case, though, it is rooted in continental European thought such as French Revolution radicalism and subsequent collectivist ideologies (devoted more to equality and a concept of "change") than in conservatism’s bedrock, more individualist Anglo Saxon thought. Thus, when referring to "conservative" and "liberal", the reference will be to the modern manifestations of such.…

Conservatism is greatly associated with the need to preserve traditions, beliefs, way of life and customs. Conservatism is also contrasted with fast-paced changes. It is now formally defined as believing in values that have been long established and the traditional practices in politics and society, as according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. The realm of conservative ideology is broad and it covers everything from the most fundamental and basic belief to the values and practices in everyday life. As for Michael Oakeshott, in his work “On Being Conservative” in the book How Conservatives Think, edited and introduced by Phillip Wallenstein Buck, his writing speaks on the physical practices and the nature of conservatism while arguing that…

Conservatism is defined to be “a set of political beliefs that include a limited role for the national government in helping individuals and in the economic affairs of the nation, as well as support for traditional values and lifestyles” (Sidlow & Henschen, 2016). During the 1950s and 1960s, conservatives emerged in opposition to Roosevelt’s New Deal. Conservatives are found on the right wing of the political spectrum, so they are in favor of limited government intervention, the free enterprise system, individual liberties, and retaining their traditional American values and beliefs. In today’s society, the population is divided between Democrats and Republicans based on their preferences. Both political parties utilize mass media to express and promote those opinions to the general audience.…

Personally, I tend to lean towards the conservative view that was present in the 19th century, but the neoliberal position in the modern world. This is because of the key difference between then and now, globalization. While domestically, I would support the conservatives in their view of government regulation for the welfare of the people, I believe that internationally, it is better to allow the liberal and capitalistic models form through increased economic interaction than through…

Property is one of five specific beliefs that make up the central themes of conservatism. It is an asset that possesses a deep and, at times, almost mystical significance for conservatives. Conservatives believe that property has four functions in society: economic incentive, psychological security, social values and a stake in society, and an extension of an individual’s personality.…

James Farney describes North American conservatism as an ideology focused on reacting to progressivism, resisting any changes from the perceived natural and historical. The three major areas of change that concern conservatives are the breakdown of the community, the breakdown of laissez-faire capitalism, and the breakdown of traditional family and gender roles. Each of these concerns maps onto one of the three branches of modern conservatism: traditionalists are primarily concerned with the community, laissez-faire conservatives (fiscal conservatives) are primarily concerned with government intervention into the economy and the social conservatives are primarily concerned with the changing nature of gender and family roles. Of these three…

On the subject of religion, conservatives do believe in a deity, or something similar of that nature. A deity could exist because of religious faith or simply because they do not trust human nature. By acknowledging God as a higher power, conservatives believe that this allows man and government to hold Him accountable for their actions and mistakes. And in doing so, this places a supreme law that “rules society as well as conscience, forging an eternal chain of right and duty which links great and obscure, living and dead.” (Story and Laurie, 47) which prevent man and government from having free reign. When government tries to implement laws that are contradictory to divine law, conservatives seek to challenge the validity of those said laws.…

If I were to describe my political ideology, I would consider myself mostly liberal with some independent views. I believe in equality for everyone, regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, etc. I think Americans need to be a little more accepting, and open to reaching out and helping those in need. This country needs to continue moving forward and growing, and I do not see that happening with a conservative in charge.…

In a nation with such polar political stances and opinions, I typically view myself as a liberal-leaning member of society. As a liberal, I value the rights of the individual, and the freedoms that we are born with. I take into consideration that opportunity and equality for all is an important idea that should be stressed in our society and should be carried out by our government. I also feel that it is the role of the government to eliminate social problems and protect the natural rights of each individual. I stand on the ground of eliminating the death penalty, enforcing pro-choice decisions, and accepting that Global Warming/ Climate Change is a direct result of poor human decisions and consumptions, along with many other liberal ideas.…

I do believe this is a fair assumption to say that conservatism should not be a single ideology because so many conservatives are so divided amongst themselves nowadays. According to Google search the definition for conservative is the act of holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion. I believe the ideology of conservatism is used as a political base that many other forms of conservatism branch off into its own political ideas and ideologies. There is a political spectrum that goes: Far Left (Consistently Liberal) to Mostly Liberal to Moderate to Mostly Conservative to (Consistently Conservative) Far Right. There are several different forms of conservatism that go along the spectrum, such as Neo-conservatism, Traditionalist conservatism, Classical conservatism, Libertarian conservatism, Social conservatism, and the list goes on. For example, the Neo-conservatism wanted to convert the current conservatism groups and Republicans “into a new kind of conservative politics suitable to governing a modern democracy.” (Kristol, pg. 189, Online) This would hold true…
