In a paragraph, record the details of what happened in the film
The film begins at Raffles hotel in Singapore, minutes prior to the Japanese invasion. After the sound of a bombing and the instructions of military officials, the women and children and boarded onto a boat set for safety but, after it was bombed, meant that the women and children landed on the Indonesian Island of Sumatra. When things couldn’t get worse, the women were quickly captured by the Japanese and taken to a POW camp, where they were beaten, used as sex slaves and killed. The women went over two years in this camp before the war came to an end.
How did the women relate to one another at first and how did this change if at all?
The women at first were challenged by the cramped surroundings of the boat however that was short lived and once taken to the POW camp, they soon grew to love and care for one another. Often there were difficulties and tension between nationalities but all in all, the women worked together to survive the nightmare in which they were living.
In what ways was this an unusual POW camp?
This was an unusual POW in a number of ways. Firstly, it consisted on no soldiers or men, simply women and children. Despite being women, they were subject to hard labour had they not joined the gentlemen’s club. They had a camp choir or “vocal orchestra” which also set them apart from the regular POW camps.
Does the film portray the Japanese as evil? Why do you think the director does this?
The film defiantly portrays the Japanese soldiers as evil and hard hearted. They are constantly shown beating women and even killing women for crimes that seemed so small. The director does this to encourage the viewer to feel sorry for the women and emphasizes the point that the women are the victims.
