“Concrete Angel” “Concrete Angel” is a song written by Rob Crosby and Stephanie Bentley. This song was sung by Martina McBride and released in 2002. This song can be looked at as a poem with a lot of meaning behind it. A little girl who was abused violently tries to hide the scars and bruises but still managed to deal with the pain. Taking a look behind the words of this poem will help readers understand how the little girl is being portrayed by means of imagery, repetition, metaphors, mood, and even the meaning of the title “Concrete Angel.” Rob Crosby and Stephanie Bentley us a lot of imagery throughout this song which gives readers a clear image of what the little girl is going through. In the first quatrain of this song Crosby and Bentley portray the little girl going to school and “hiding the bruises with the linen and lace of her dress.” Picturing a little girl walking to school with no one to reach out to begins to set the mood for this song. A young child who is abused can be very complicated. They don’t want anyone to know what is happening and are afraid to tell because of what may happen when they get back home. Or maybe they feel like it is their fault that they are being hit or verbally abused because they just don’t understand. The little girl in this song tries to be strong but is dying inside. Crosby and Bentley quote “she is in a world that she can’t rise above.” This is a very strong quote for this song because it explains that she can’t do anything about the abuse however she is trying to deal with the pain but it is hard being so small and powerless when no one is there to help. “Somebody cries in the moon of the night, the neighbors hear but they turn out the light.” This quote gives readers a clear explanation as well as an image of a helpless child who is basically on her own. She keeps trying to go on with her life but things get worse day by day and

I sense that the speaker is a male. I get this feeling from the way he hides his pain. Concealing your feelings is often considered the masculine thing to do, and the speaker does this throughout the entire poem. He is writing about a past experience in his childhood. I sense that the poem comes from an outside perspective, yet not too far out. The speaker is not the one doing the fighting, but, perhaps he is watching it–living it–as the child of two disputing parents. The stanza "certain doors were locked at night, feet stood for hours outside them . . . " indicates to me that the speaker was a child when this took place. He watched as his father stood outside the locked bedroom door, shouting to be let in. He watched as the dishes piled up in the sink and his mother was too occupied with the fights to clean them. These are the images that the poem puts into my head,…

This song represents the kid’s relationship with Boo Radley because he has been watching them for a couple of years and has developed strong feelings for them, almost like a brother. The song is called “Little Do You Know” and I think it describes their relationship because it is sort of like little do you know that Boo is actually watching over the kids. One part of the song says “little do you know how I’m breaking while you fall asleep.” To me those lyrics would be coming from Boo to the kids, because he is misunderstood and sad about it. Boo wants to go out and see the kids but he is so shy so he can’t see them, so he stays inside sad- breaking while they fall asleep.…

    A. The Confederate officer who I like the most is Robert Edward Lee. I believe that a strong leadership is needed to captain the Confederate Army. General Lee is the commander of the the army, so he is certainly a brilliant leader. Also, Lee is “a gentleman” (xvi). “He does not drink or smoke or gamble or chase women”; he does not believe in slavery. Most importantly, I like Lee’s disposition. He can control himself very well and never loose his temper. In contrast, General Ambrose Powell Hill is “a moody man” (xvii). His bad temper makes me like him the least.…

Both in the poem and in the book the main characters or narrators were victimized. In speak Malinda was victimized in more than one way for one she was raped. For two she was made fun of for being an outcast I know this because at the pep rally that heather from Ohio made her go to she was pushed down the bleachers and teased. For three she was repeatedly psychologically victimized by her rapist Andy Evans it says in the book that whenever they where inside of in school suspension when the teacher left he blew in her ear which was just a way of making her uncomfortable and also when she was eating lunch with the Martha’s he came over there to make her feel bad. Also just like the narrator from “I fight like a girl” we…

Adam’s incredible vocals and the rest of the band’s slow, romantic way of bringing this song together makes it sensitive and charming. “Beauty queen of only eighteen/ She had some trouble with herself” (1-2) Adam opens the song which summarizes the story of “She Will Be Loved.” At such a young age, the girl has allowed men to take advantage of her and instead of evaluating her romantic choices; she believes that her problems stem from her own flaws. This song could be about a prostitute, which would fit with the meaning of these lyrics. The girl is young and beautiful, but because of her troubles, she’s had to face adult realities that make her feel worthless and insecure. “I don 't mind spending every day/ Out on your corner in the pouring rain/ Look for the girl with the broken smile/ Ask her if she wants to stay awhile/ And she will be loved” Adam writes for the chorus. Adam highlights his dedication to this girl in the first line of the hook. The reference to the pouring rain means that even when life is less than beautiful, he’ll still be there waiting for her if she needs him much like in “Sunday Morning”. He will keep his distance if that’s what she wants, but he’s always just around the corner if she changes her mind. Adam uses “Broken smile” and this shows that while the girl puts on a face of happiness, she’s really broken inside. Because Adam is a…

Nevertheless she explains how this time “he is going to tattoo herself on him forever” (Sanchez 17). She will last for eternity. I do find the work of the lyrics to relate to the man in a way. It could be possible that the man whom she cared for had tattoos. Lastly my final analysis is that the moon shines and finds the light in every hole, crook, and creek last for hours in darkness. The man was filled with darkness and she is the light. “Watchout for the full moon of Sonia shinin down on ya” Sonia shines with light and in a dark soul, she scares (Sanchez 17). If Sonia Sanchez had mentioned who this man was and what he did to her, the reader would be able to relate. However, since the audience does not know, we can only take guesses as to what he did. Why after a fall is she up with confidence and full of light? It is because she knows what light she is capable of. This poem is about Sonia Sanchez who knows her worth and does not take into consideration describing the man who will not realize her light and power until it is too…

There are many images in the song that would create a picture of what the narrator is going through in life. The band uses the image of the narrator looking in the mirror to see if he’s still there as an example of a person trying to find his or her self because he/she have been bullied so often. Many struggle with finding a self-image after being abused so much, these people lack self-confidence and the courage to stand up to the bullies, which causes them to be more susceptible to being bullied. “Kids just love to tease, who’d know it put me underground at seventeen”. This line depicts the narrator being teased so much and the kids that did it not caring, that it put he/she in the ground at the young age of seventeen. Parents should never have to bury their children, but when kids that love to be bullies continuously scrutinize the innocent kids it causes the kids that are being bullied to react to the way they feel about themselves, this often leads to suicide. The narrator says “my parents had no clue that I ate my lunches alone in the bathroom”, this shows that that the only place he/she felt safe was in the bathroom alone. He/she did not have the strength to tell his/her parents because of how insecure they felt. Depression caused by bullying often goes unnoticed out of fear of what may come next if people speak their minds to others. Another image that could often be looked over is the image of the days not changing. The narrator…

The Stone Angel, first published in 1964 by McClelland and Stewart, is perhaps the best-known of Margaret Laurence's series of novels set in the fictitious town of Manawaka, Manitoba. In parallel narratives set in the past and the present-day (early 1960s), The Stone Angel tells the story of Hagar Currie Shipley. In the present-day narrative, 90-year-old Hagar is struggling against being put in a nursing home, which she sees as a symbol of death. The present-day narrative alternates with Hagar's looking back at her life.…

The song You Got a Friend in Me by Randy Newman is a very famous song about friendship and it became even more popular after its appearance in the movie Toy Story. The lyrics read “You’ve got a friend in me.” This would describe the same bond which Jeremy, a 12 year old looking forward to being a teen, and Lizzy, a young lady whose mother left her when she was a year old, have with each other. In the story Lizzy helps Jeremy find the keys to a box which his father left for him. Lizzy spent her entire summer helping Jeremy find the keys when she could have been doing other fun and important things.…

She describes how confused and uncomprehending she felt, when she attempts to make any reason for their obvious hate towards her. “What was wrong with these people? It was just a song, not a combat invitation!” (ll. 63-65). It is not hard to imagine how difficult it would be for a 15-year-old girl, who had grown up in a mostly black neighbourhood, to understand how some people could become so offended by a single song about a black boy dating a white girl.…
