New Horizons Music Festival: New Video and Electronics
October 26, 2014

On Friday, October 24, 2014, I attended sixteenth Festival of contemporary music “New Horizon Music Festival: New Video and Electronics which was held in Ophelia Paris Concert Hall, Truman State University, Kirksville, MO. The concert presented a variety of styles and formats of live electro-acoustic music and focused on the works and performers outside the local community. Initially, the scene fulfilled my expectations of a classical music concert. It was orderly and sophisticated and the majority of the audience was dressed formally to suit the occasion. The only explanation I can think of is the placement of the concert in the middle of a week full of my midterms.
The concert started with giving special thanks to Mr. Robert Martin who directed and coordinated the concert. Similarly, thanks were given to program designer and assistors who played an active role in making the festival possible. Soon after acknowledging Mr. Martin, the presenter informed the audience about the artist whose work was going to be showcased. The concert featured live electro-acoustic music from composers and performers who have travelled all the way from Kansas City, Colorado, Alabama and Atlanta. All the performances consisted of a solo performance accompanied with a composer resulting into small ensembles. The only exceptions were the two live electro-acoustic video/music creations. Generally, each piece was featuring electronics usually joined by an acoustic instrument. The concert lasted about sixty minutes approximately.
The first piece played in the concert was “tempora mutanur” which was composed by Chin Ting Chan and Pei-Lun tsai. The name of the piece means “the times are changed” in Latin. It is usually stated in a hexametric form, followed by another phrase “nos et mutamur in illis”, meaning we too are changed in them. It is an

I have never heard such music as this and watch the players articulate the movements and timing necessary to be able to play such difficult pieces as these. Their sound was like a whole orchestra playing with them but it was only four players. It was a whole new experience for me. These pieces were beautiful but I guess I just didn’t have an ear for the changes in pitch and frequency. It was quite odd but also added to the pieces. I can’t wait to go to other concerts. The atmosphere is unlike any other. This experience unmatched by other concert experiences I’ve…

The performance was at Ruth Lilly Performance Hall Christel Dehaan Fine Arts Center, on the campus of the University of Indianapolis. It was very beautiful, the program gave a disclaimer about the design of the concert hall; which read “The acoustics of Ruth Lilly Performance Hall was designed for optimum dispersion of sound, projecting the softest parts of the music clearly too each listener.” I was extremely amazed by this note in the program because we learned about the way that music and venues are connected. The hall is not large like a cathedral, but there were hanging from the walls so that sound would no be absorbed so easily. There was a chandelier hanging above the stage that also incorporated the microphones, and the spotlight…

When thinking of orchestral performances, one possibly thinks of stiff, formal environments that have a dress requirement of dresses and tuxedos. Visions of aloof, almost militant conductors with long tails on their suits also come to mind. However, after attending the Louisville Orchestra’s pops season event “The Music of Led Zeppelin”, it became very obvious that even the prestigious Louisville Orchestra and their devoted following could let their hair down and rock and roll for one evening.…

The performance started at about nine o’clock. On that night professor O’Neal was doing a lot of jobs including a bass guitar player, singer, and the composer of this concert. He received rounds of applause as soon as he stood on the stage. There was twelve pieces of melody in this brilliant performance. The first song was “Black Butterfly,” and of course the composer is professor Kevin O’Neal who also started with a bass solo, and later on, piano and drum with a fast beat changed the slow bass beat, and then all the three instrument joined together. I think this piece of music was showing the beautiful black butterfly’s journey of life. It made me wonder the taste of nature and the freedom in the sky.…

The concert was somewhat as I expected to be. The concert was so formal and organized. . Even though I had some prejudgments about the concert at first, I enjoyed listening to these pieces live. I will try to attend future classical music concerts. There were some parts where the management team could have done better. The artist demonstrated dynamics, technique, harmony and togetherness beautifully. Before leaving the concert hall I was able to speak briefly with some of the musicians, they were very helpful in answering my questions about the…

Overall, I feel that attending this concert made me more aware of the diversity of style. I enjoyed the many different sounds that this orchestra performed. I also enjoyed the dramatic tension I and the vibe that was given in the pieces . But mostly what I enjoyed the most of this whole performance was the second to last piece that was played. The way that the saxophone was played opened my ears to a new sound that I never heard. For this being the first concert that I have attended I can honestly say that this was a great…

On Sunday April 7 , 2013 I attended the Junior Recital for Michelle Ellison (soprano) and Rachel Stanton (piano) at Oberlin College & Conservatory. Coming to my second show at Oberlin College I really didn’t know what to expect this time around. On this nice day at Oberlin College I observed many students outside playing their instruments and various groups outside singing in circles enjoying the weather. I could tell that these students were very passionate about music. Inside of the conservatory building the recital was held inside of the Kulas Recital Hall. This was my first time entering a room that was made specifically for musical recitals. The hall wasn’t too big but it was large enough to fit a nice sized crowd in a narrow room.…

    Jazz Brass Band Concert

In between sets, the performers would speak about jazz history and how the purpose of jazz back in the day was to get everybody dancing and happy, and in being told that, it allowed me to listen closer to the music and try to feel what that was like. Looking around the room during the performance, I would see a number of people nodding their heads or tapping their feet along to the music. Even people who didn’t initially seem interested in the performance upon arriving looked genuinely interested in the performance because the music sounded so inviting. It made me curious to see what it would be like to watch a jazz band perform in a real venue where you can get up and actually dance. I would really consider attending another performance in the future just to feel that same intense atmosphere that was created that…

Compared to all the other concerts that I have gone to, that concert was a change in the atmosphere. I remember last month going to my sister’s Jazz concert. I remember walking in the theater a little bit late, but remember hearing the sound of the trumpets in the background. As soon as I walked in, I realized that it has totally different atmosphere from what my expectations were for the Jazz concerts. Unlike all the other concerts I attended, this concert intended for small audience, probably around a hundred people. Also, this jazz concert seemed very relaxed and comfortable. Most of people were dressed very casual, a lot of them were the kid’s parents and they were wearing jeans and shirts. But the musicians were dressed in suit and dress in all black. I remember that in a…

This essay has been a review of the concert I attended. In the preceding paragraphs, I have explained the musical elements that went well, what could have been better and my personal opinion of the concert. As a musician, I learned a lot from attending this performance, both about the music itself and what I should strive for in my own performances. I hope that through this essay I was able to share this new knowledge with you. I look forward to putting my new knowledge to work in a practical way as I prepare my next…

The name of the concert that I attended was called “TCU Jazz Combos” and featured a variety of jazz compositions. This concert took place in the Pepsico Recital Hall on November 14, 2012 at 7:00 in the evening. The event was casual; however, I chose to wear khaki pants and a button down shirt because I was not certain as to what the dress code would be. The performers’ names and their respective instruments were Mike Korson- Saxophone, Garrett Wingfield- Saxophone, Luke Wingfield- Trumpet, Alex Neal- Guitar, Edo Frenkel- Piano, Will Gilstrap- Bass, Russell Wharton- Drums, and Tanner Webb- Trombone. During the concert they played various jazz compositions written by some of the very performers themselves. Several other pieces were more well known jazz compositions from internationally recognized artists. The concert itself was not very crowded, with pockets of individuals scattered throughout the audience. There was definitely interaction between the performers and the audience. I found this aspect of the jazz concert to be unique to other concerts. Jazz concerts are significantly less formal than classical orchestra concerts or even piano concerts in which applause is saved for the very end. In jazz concerts, after a solo it is considered appropriate to applaud, even during the middle of a piece. Having never attended a jazz concert before, I found this to be a wonderful learning experience.…
