Roosevelt was possessing the missing pieces to McKinley’s jigsaw puzzle. For 113 days in the summer of 1898 the United States went to war with Spain. Actually, the President at the time (McKinley) and Vice President Teddy Roosevelt didn’t plan on going to war with Spain but it occurred. This war happened even though McKinley took every route possible to prevent going to war. In addition, it happened because of the ambition and drive McKinley internally possessed. It wasn’t his strongest decision he could have made but it fortunately panned out for the best. By the fast win by the Americans it put them on the map and showed that no matter any situation we can fight and fend off foreign enemies. For an abundance of years, the world has seen most of the power associated with the countries established in Europe. As global affairs are an important topic for the president of the United States, many could view nations that had the most influence in global matter. For example, countries like Spain, Great Britain, and France dominated this aspect in the world. But with the win in this war, a monumental shift was in action as the United States was maturing. Population in the United States grew rapidly, and many Americans pondered that it would become the world’s major power. Also, another key point in this whole situation was Spain controlled mainly all the islands off the coast in Central America. The two islands that many seem to take away as important is Cuba and Puerto Rico. On a side note, Spain sometimes tried to end all trade ties with Cuba. In Spain doing this absurd tactic, is would damage and interfere with the trade relationship with Cuba and America. As President McKinley saw an opportunity to gain respect as a country he enables a tariff that produces the rise for American industry. As McKinley enacts on this, he created a tariff that taxes on manufactured goods that increased by 10 percent.
Before this tariff, the tax was 39 percent and after this tariff was enabled, it was at 49 percent. The reason for this tax increase was to promote American industry and have more goods produced in the country. This was the main focal point because we wanted to start showing how strong America is and how they will be respected. Another reason was to create economic opportunities of Americans. The middle class during this time whether it be clerks, managers or white collar workers, expanded rapidly. This economic growth invited large amounts of women into the workforce. Also, millions of immigrants entered the country during this time. When immigration was severed off with Europe, thousands of blacks flocked from their farm jobs to the northern cities to received access to the industrial economy and it also was changing Americans mind on racial views. In contrast this tax increase also impacted Americans in different ways. If you were a farmer, the price of farm equipment was raised and there was no addressing in these abnormally outrageous prices. This tariff also fails for people in the agricultural field by farmers being forced into purchasing expensive products from American companies while the products that were in this market were unprotected and competitive. Another problem this had was the impact it put on Americans. The tariff that McKinley placed increased the costs for all Americans in the ways of purchasing wages and power. Also, overseas items remained less expensive than local goods still rose. The raising of the price of labor eventually created the rise of costs to manufacture local goods. These local goods produced in the United States cost more and the supplies that make these products are not cheap causing the pricing to be high. Subsequently, it also had effect on the Republican Party. When this Act passed, it guided itself to defeat
in the next elections. In 1892 voters showed their displeasure at the polls. This displeasure would eventually lead to his death. In September 1901, McKinley was shaking hands with Americans when a strange human named Leon Czolgosz put a .32 caliber up to McKinley’s chest and shot him twice in the abdomen. McKinley eight days later died due to infection caused by the gunshot wounds. This was the third American president that has been assassinated. In this result is was Theodore’s missing puzzle pieces that made America fair. Theodore Roosevelt, an intelligent Vice President, knew what it meant to be a leader in a country that is thriving and prospering. A country that has proved itself in the act of defense of war. When Roosevelt became president he decided to help Americans out with balancing the deals between business, workers, and consumers. His unique philosophy was known as the square deal. With that philosophy he decided to run as part of the Progressive party. Theodore Roosevelt ran for election in 1912 as part of The Progressive Party. In a comical humor, Roosevelt had the name circulating around his political party because he proclaimed where he killed a moose with a bull whip is where he accounted that he will run for presidency. Furthermore, the great leadership and progressive ideas made him the president who he was. He had the most knowledge and grit any president had and that led him to be liked by the American population. McKinley’s influence on Roosevelt went far and beyond what citizens actually thought about McKinley. McKinley laid the concrete for Roosevelt, in the ways of the dominating in war, providing economic opportunity and filling in the missing pieces that McKinley had. A huge influence that bonded these two together was when production was becoming more prominent in America. McKinley’s ideas about American production and Roosevelts strong courage that pushed him through everything in life, create the foundation for the factory’s now a day’s. All in all, McKinley’s way made Theodores America possible in ways the human population can’t even think of.
