The Power of the Sexes: Katy Perry and Mac Miller!

Prior to analyzing the two music videos between Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” and Mac
Miller’s “Best Day Ever”, the two have a lot more in common than meets the eye. Both deal with the power and control of others. Perry has dominance over men who think they can try to get over on her while Miller has control over other rappers in the music industry. The two songs are also very different from one another. Perry has everything handed to her because of her control whereas Miller works hard to earn the riches in life.!

The lyrics in each video really help to compare how much power each artist has over
everyone else. Katy Perry comes at the deviant men “like a dark horse”. They think that they can fool her and use her but she pulls a fast one on them. A dark horse is a candidate or competitor about whom little is known but who unexpectedly wins or succeeds. Katy Perry is an unknown to these men but since she is a women she is naturally thought to be weak and powerless. Mac Miller on the other is all about the struggle to be ahead of other rappers in the music industry. “Now I got these rappers all breaking up a sweat//Cause every time I get up on the mic I come correct”. He basically means what he sings. When he is front of the mic, other rappers know he is the best and become nervous because they could never amount to Miller.
He works hard to earn where he is today and today is the “Best Day Ever”.!

depicted as Cleopatra. Cleopatra was a symbol of feminine power back in ancient Egypt. This ties back into Perry being a “Dark Horse” where they both end with success and power. The
exotic nature in the video can go to show that Perry is unique and one of a kind. She will not settle for anything less. The video also depicts her
