Community Cultural Wealth
According to the article Community Cultural Wealth by Dr. Taray-Yosso cultural wealth is defined as an areal of knowledge, skills, abilities and contacts possessed and utilized by communities of color to survive and resist operations. Although cultural wealth deals with the many skills aspects of economic growth, both of which are crucial to the attainment of higher education nonetheless cultural wealth can be categorized into three defiant groups known as cultural ties, cultural capital and cultural wealth. The success of a college education is dependent upon my factors most of which are concepts of family, aspirational, social and resistant capitals.

The reason my family capital will keep me motivated and determined is because the way my mom and family pushed me in school to get my college degree. I have three younger siblings that keep me determined to doing my work and staying in school. My mother is a hard working mother. She would do anything for one of her kids as long as they are getting their education. My mother always took care of me since day one. She’s been my rock! I never had a male role model figure in my life to show me how its done or to show me how to grow into a mature young man. It was always my mother who stuck by my side and never gave up on me when I misbehaved. I always think to myself, how did she do it? Growing up as the second oldest it was me who took care of my younger siblings while my mother was at work and sister away in college. I always took on a lot of responsibility when it came to taking care of my siblings such as feeding them, dressing them and bathing them for school in the morning. My mom always instilled two things in my head as I was growing up, first was to be strong hearted and secondly independent so that I can become successful in life and accomplish each and every goal that I set for myself. Without family capital, I would not have the great support system to help me stay focused throughout my educational

For our first interview, Jenn Tracy of General Mills and I spoke on the phone for a little over half an hour. Mrs. Tracy and I had a very interesting conversation about life, work, and balance. To start off the interview, I asked her questions about her background in an effort to get to know her better and possibly better understand her answers to my questions later on. Through my questions I learned that Mrs. Tracy spent four years at MSU-Mankato for her undergrad. She is also married, has two younger kids, and absolutely loves to spend her free time being outside.…

I strongly believe that race and class both plays a significant role to access higher education in the United States. The dominant Neoliberal ideology prophases that work hard and anyone can get to the top; however, it is a false promise for the most of the people of color and poor class. After fifty years of the Civil Rights act, the people of color are lagging in development indicators such as economic, educational, and political representation at every levels. Several studies have established that schools in the areas of people of color and the poor class are getting lower funding and the quality of education is low. This indicates that students from these neighborhoods have lesser chances to join higher education compared to their counterparts, white and affluent students. Due to historical oppression and existing marginalization many students of color do not get higher cultural capital from their families, which further reduces their chances to join college…

Throughout my entire life, I have found that hard work and dedication can help me achieve any goal that I set. I have overcome the separation and lack of decent parents, incarceration of my oldest brother, and many other events with the morals and skills that were taught to me by my grandparents (who are my legal guardians). Due to their influence and love, I have always put my best foot forward and looked at the world with optimism. Since the second grade, I have been in gifted/honor courses, exceeded through my classes, and have made many friends. My backbone does not consist of selfish desires or influences; it consists of my morals and the family and friends that I do have pushing me to change the world.…

For example, with a mainly white university campus acting as our social institution, a Chicano/a student's ability to maintain academic achievement without letting their individual barriers and struggles affect them would be the result of having strong navigational capital. Besides students, this also applies to adults and their personal affairs which can include individual, family, community, and work factors. For example, Mexican immigrants, who come to the U.S., who have to maneuver through new institutions, that are centered around white middle class folks, develop navigational capital. In these cases, it can also be described as inner resources dwelling from their cultural background that help, not only to get by, but to thrive and exceed their expected expectations. This capital can help to navigate social institutions such as the job market, health care system, and the judicial system, to name a few, but can be applied to any single institution that creates an uneven playing field for Chicanos/as (Yosso 2006). Overall this branch can benefit the individual in an institution that is formed on race, and continues to work against them, while still drawing from their own backgrounds of lesser opportunities.…

Many people in my life have prepared me for my future and have taught me how to handle any obstacle thrown my way. My parents have inspired me to never settle for anything but the best, and have taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. Both of my parents came from families without a strong financial basis or a stronghold of people who believed that they could excel; moreover, this led my parents to becoming doctors and providing support in every aspect for my sister and I. My parents’ determination has led to my belief in the veracious message: nothing is going to be handed to you because you must work to make something happen. As I have gotten older and realize the little time I have left sheltered by my parents, this idea has prepared me for the real world due to the fact that I know not to take anything for granted, but to work for what I want to accomplish in life.…

I come from middle-class parents, of which neither attended a post-secondary institution. My sister and I are the first in our lineage to attend and complete a college degree. I grew up in Cali, Colombia where medical care and special treatment for health issues as well as higher education was not very accessible due to my family financial resources. Underrepresented individuals, as myself, feel there is not much support for positive community development, nor encouragement to individuals to seek and achieve opportunities that they felt were out of their…

My family in particular has never known their limits, always thinking we can find a way around any obstacles ourselves, or do anything as long as we work hard enough. They have passed that ideology down to me. Without my family continually supporting me and giving up so much of their lives, my cousins and I would not be where we are at now, living the lives we live. They have given up so much for me, so I do the same for them, putting in an abundance of effort to make my family proud in order to make all of our dreams a reality. I can see my future straight ahead, and I will never give up until I reach it. Even though that vision has evolved and shifted with each passing year, I know the possibilities are endless as long as I work hard enough, and I will never give up until I reach the dream I have worked so hard…

Higher education provides an avenue for individuals to gain skills and competencies that will benefit them far into the future. Furthermore, possessing a college degree can improve a person’s family dynamics and outcomes and allow him or her to leave a positive legacy. Because formal education is recognized for the positive life outcomes that it creates, some groups in society have always pursued it; however, it has also been a privilege that not all people could access. African-Americans have not always had an opportunity to receive a formal education, and African-American males have not had the same advantages as others. Although African-American males can access higher education today, their college completion rates have…

I was walking down the street the other day when I stopped and took a hard look at all the different people, businesses, and cultures that surrounded me. My first thought was "wow, we really live in a world that is held together by a wide variety of ethnic groups." Without all the different cultures and influences that I have experienced, I would not be the person I am today. Ethnicity plays an amazing role in whom we are today; from how we are treated and how we are raised, all plays into account when we take a look at different ethnic groups. This paper touches upon that very fact.…

My parents have always motivated me to try my hardest and not give up. They always explain how they would have loved to be role models for my siblings and I. Truth be told, of course I look up to them, they are my motivation. My mother graduated as a cosmetologist a year or 2 ago. She was in her late 30’s to early 40’s. It’s never too late right? There are four children, including me, it was hard at first. We were all dependent of my Father. As of today I can say my Mother never gave up on her dreams. My Father was raised by his grandparents who have both unfortunately passed away. He had to get out of school at a very early…

Having people to support me is probably one of the biggest things that keep me thriving to wanting to succeed as a student. Sometimes, I can feel low about myself and just feel like I’m all alone. It really helps having family there to uplift me when I feel hopeless. I have honestly thought about giving up multiple times, but my family is always there to back me up. For example, after high school I didn’t even want to go to college. I doubted myself and thought school just wasn’t for me. As Carlos had stated from The Student Fear Factor, “It was like I thought I wouldn’t make it, like I wasn’t going to be able to make it. And I made it hard and it wasn’t that hard.” That’s exactly how I felt. However my parents, especially my mom, pushed me to go. I was told that I am smarter than that. They believed in me and knew I could succeed. Having support from your family is probably one of the most important things. Every time I have a problem with school whether it’s me needing help with things I don’t understand, moral support, or even financial support, my family is always there to help me and always will be. I remember the time I was ready to drop a class because I couldn’t afford books for it. My mom could not let money stop me from furthering my education, so she gave me money to buy my books. Knowing I have support from my family is such a comforting feeling, and I know I always have them to keep me from giving up in this long journey to success.…
