The common cold is not just one virus, but over 200 different strains of viruses. The most common type of cold-causing virus is the rhinovirus, causing 20% – 50% of all colds. It is widely believed that it is the virus itself that somehow causes the observed symptoms. However, this is not the case. When a cold infects the body (the nasal cavity and back of the throat, to be precise), the white blood cells trigger chemical mediators to help fight the attack, indirectly causing symptoms such as a blocked nose, aches and pains and a sore throat.
