Come In The Woods: A Short Story
“Come in, Woods.”
“Woods here,” replies the marksman.
“Remember your mission. Take out the target and radio in for evac’. More info will be given asap.”
“Roger that, captain.”
The soldier makes his way to the window of an old abandoned home. He rests his rifle on the edge of the window frame. He mounts the scope, adjusts the cross hairs, and waits.
“Sigma Three to Woods.”
“Woods here, in position and ready to go.”
“Your target has black hair, a white sweater, and goes by Menendez. He will be coming out of a black van, license plate Z2364 with security; with the job done right, they won’t be any trouble.”
“Understood. One shot, one kill.”
Shortly after, a black van pulls over on the side of a villa that is across from the soldier’s

“It’s important to return order to the policia. We need to cut all power within the cartel family tree. Failing this mission is not an option, soldier; we are not the only ones who believe in this. If you don’t do this, I can assure you that others will,” responds the team leader.
“Message received.”
The soldier grips onto his rifle, finger cocked onto the trigger. He thinks to himself, You have never failed a mission before. Just do it. He is just another enemy. . . .
He aligns the cross hairs, moving the rifle along with each shift in movement of his prey. His muscles become tense. His mind tells him he is ready to do it, yet his body prevents him from accomplishing an act that is against his morals. He takes a deep breath, sweat running down the side of his face. He forces himself to shoot.
A loud bang echoes through the streets. The kid’s body is knocked back, and in the blink of an eye, he is no longer moving. The soldier looks down. His feeling of regret and stress has become fear. He never shot the bullet. Out of nowhere, a second shot is released, and this time, he knows it is meant for him. He had not been

These three teenagers receive their first call-out from the Portland County Sheriff’s Office to search for Bobby Balog, the missing autistic man in Forest Park. One of the supervisors, Jon Partridge, assigns the trio to search in a particular trail, where Bobby is least likely to be found. There, they encounter a man jogging with his dogs, a man in his early thirties carrying a big duffel bag, a homeless guy with black dreads, and a white-haired man who claims that the birder’s notebook Alexis found is his. Instead of finding…

However, his own fear of death causes him to question if he wants to kill the opposing soldiers. After complaining about a new gun they have recently received that has some inconvenient problems, the instructors tell them, "we'll [soldiers] really make marksmanship history when we tear the asses out of the Iraqi armored brigades…" (156) This statement makes Swafford reconsider his duty as a soldier and surfaces his paranoia of being shot and he thinks to himself, "But do I really care about tearing the asses out of the Iraqis?...this is death- the war moving closer, encroaching upon me… Who will sight in on me?" (156) Many soldiers are confused as to why they are even fighting the war in the first place, causing feelings of carelessness. Here, Swafford questions his "care" toward killing the Iraqis, suggesting that his primary concern is surviving the battle. He understands the impinging war means he is closer to death. He is paranoid about dying, but he is also fearful for the death of both U.S. and Iraqi soldiers. Although he is confident in his skills as a sniper, he is scared that an Iraqi soldier will hone in on him taking his life with one precise shot. The constant paranoia of being sighted by opposing soldiers and fear of dying generate his obsession with his weapons because they will protect…

Starting from the mysterious sound that woke the laundress every night. Although that was not the only mystery hiding in the story. The laundresses arm had been paralyzed after she left her gaze although I still wonder why. Even though her she was in fear that has nothing to do with her arm paralyzing. The main mystery was why the army men arouse from their grave every night marching through the street. As said in the the story “what you are hearing is the Army of the Dead. They are Confederate soldiers who died in hospital without knowing that the war was over. Each night, they rise from their graves and go to reinforce Lee in Virginia to strengthen the weakened Southern forces." This makes me wonder of why they are headed back to Lee if they know they are dead. Or do…

The sniper in the story is described as “a man who is used to looking at death” (O’Flaherty p.1). Throughout the story, the sniper manages to instinctively kill person after person without any remorse or even the slightest sign of emotion. He even managed to kill an old woman simply because she was a possible informant and a threat to his safety. After killing another one of his regular enemies near the end the story though, strangely he becomes overwhelmed with a sense of grief and sorrow for what he was doing. At first you would think this indicates that the sniper was not necessarily a blood hungry person driven by the desire to kill others. Instead, he seems more like just a soldier doing his job because he has to and trying not to think about the fact that what he has been doing all along was actually against his morals. However, moments after this sudden realization that he has, he throws his gun to the ground which triggers it to fire, and it just goes past the side of his head. After this, he gets knocked back into “reality” and laughs it off like it is nothing. Because of this, it is hard to clearly see if he is truly just a soldier doing his job or in fact a horrible person who enjoys killing simply for the fun of it.…

    Into The Woods

Before Grimm, before Supernatural, and even before Wicked, there was one “reimagining of classic fairy tales with interwoven plots and grey scale characters” and that was Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim uses four familiar stories to set the scene for his overarching plot allowing him to concentrate on jokes and creating new relationships between old characters. He also uses familiar characters in ways that blend categories. Through much of act one every character is stock through and through, yet by the end of the play our dashing prince charming has become an unapologetic adulterer, and the wicked old witch becomes an anti-hero. In addition to plot and character Sondheim pays special attention to his musical numbers; just from the first number we understand the characters relationships to one another, their motivations (having children, going to the festival, visiting grandma, and not starving), and we’re introduced to the play’s key metaphor: the woods. While these aspects were vital to the performances success I will be concentrating on the diction and acting.…
