Writing in 1782, J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur tried to define "the American, this new man." He was, Crèvecoeur argued, "neither a European nor a descendant of a European" but an "American, who, leaving behind all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys, and the new rank he holds." Crèvecoeur presumed that America was a melting pot, that the environment created a homogeneous American culture, with similar values, beliefs, and social practices. Such cultural uniformity is inherently plausible. After all, most white colonial Americans worked the soil, enjoying the fruits of their labor, and practiced similar Protestant faiths. Moreover, they believed in private ownership of the means of production by individual cultivators. Generations of scholars, following the lead of Frederick Jackson Turner in the early twentieth century, argued that free and open land on the frontier created an American people whose identity was shaped by the independence land ownership provided and whose ideology was characterized by individualism, democracy, and equality of opportunity.

Colonial cultures, however, were far less uniform than Crèvecoeur imagined. The women and men who peopled early America--Native Americans, Africans, East Anglians, Welsh, Germans, Dutch, among many others--invented conflicting popular cultures, meshing the beliefs and practices of their birthplaces with the demands of the American environment and the cultures of their neighbors. Indians and Africans, a substantial part of the colonial population, have been ignored in models of cultural uniformity. Even white Protestant immigrants created diverse cultures. While sharing a common religious vision, Puritans and Anglicans, Baptists and Quakers, differed vehemently in the particulars of their faiths.     Cre’vecouer writes to different types of people in American Farmer. In this excerpt he is expressing to every individual that Americans have so many privileges that can be obtain all they have to do is be thankful and strive for them. Cre’vecouer states this by saying “He must greatly rejoice that he lived at a time to see this fair country be discovered and settled; he must necessarily feel a share of national pride, when he views the chain of settlements which embellish these extended shores”.     Colonial Williamsburg represents life in colonial times with colonial buildings, architecture, and performances. The Capitol, built in 1705 and constructed by the contractor, Henry Cary, has helped build the new nation during the Revolutionary War era, now known as the United States of America. The representatives at the Capitol were at the oldest representative assembly in the world. This building was very important during colonial times and it is still relevant to citizens today, not just in Williamsburg. Also, the motto “That the future may learn from the past” connects deeply with the Capitol’s use.     The religious diversity of England, whose citizens were primarily Anglican, but also Puritan, Presbyterian, Separatist and Catholic, was very different from the enforced Catholic conformity of Spain. While the English government did not accept all these groups, quite a few flourished within the country. When the king began persecuting the varied religious groups present in the country, many immigrated to America. The diversity begun in England continued in the colonies: New England was Puritan; Maryland was Catholic; Pennsylvannia was Quaker; the Southern Colonies were primarily Anglican. Many New England colonies were founded when dissenters from the Purtian religion left Massachusetts to form their own communities, creating several slightly different Puritan influenced colonies with their own traditions and governments. Because so many of the colonies were founded by Englishmen of various religions seeking to escape persecution, most of the colonies offered some form of religious freedom. Rhode Island and Pennsylvannia offered the most freedom. Rhode Island extended protection to Catholics, Quakers, and Jews; Pennsylvannia guarenteered freedom of worship to all under its constitution.     England, a small and familiar place for many, was a community with very strict rules and beliefs. The Church of England was the dominant power over the country, and not everyone was happy with this dictatorship. Once the land in America was founded, Puritans and other men searching for freedom gathered and sailed across the sea to the new land. America became a “melting pot” full of various traditions, cultures, and beliefs from England as well as new “American” ideas. This process took time and involved adapting and hard work to civilize the land. In 1893, Frederick Jackson Turner discussed and wrote about the frontier and how it shaped American characteristics. He talked about the steps the Europeans had to take to transform the environment into one with reasonable laws and into one with more of a community rather than mere wilderness. “As successive terminal moraines result from successive glaciations, so each frontier leaves its traces behind it, and when it becomes a settled area the region still partakes of the frontier characteristics. (Turner 153)”1This quote talks about the frontier having characteristics from the old country, England, as well as new developed ones from America. Turner’s argument is based off the European men arriving in American and having to adapt to the Indian lifestyle which consisted of hunting and of living off the land. Later the Europeans introduced their own more civilized ideas to further the society and build up the area as a whole. Turner only talked about the male figures shaping America and completely disregarded women and their roles in the community. Although Turner’s “frontier thesis” involving males shaping America became a very prominent idea, Elizabeth Ashbridge and Mary Rowlandson, two women, wrote about their completely different experiences.
