Prompt: A range of academic interest, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.
My life has not been anything out of the ordinary. I grew up in the small town of Cinnaminson, New Jersey with my family. I have been friends with the same people for many years. I would say I am a privileged child; I have all the necessities of life and some. My life consists of playing a sport every season, going to school, and spending time with my friends and family. Once in a while I come across a speed bump but it is usually easy to overcome. I am never denied anything need; I have everything I could want and more. My parents both work extremely hard to provide for my brother and me. So far my life has been typical, but I cannot complain, I love my life.
August 11, 2012 was the day I realized life is not always going to be this easy. That was the day my brother left for college. I am very close to my brother, and this was a big change in my life. I had so many mixed emotions, I was glad he was leaving because he did get on my nerves at time. But then it hit me, I was not going to see him every day. Then I took a different approach to the situation and realized that is going to be me in a year. It stressed me out; I had so much to figure out. Where did I want to go? What did I want to do? I still don’t know the answers to these questions. All I know is I want to be a part of something bigger than myself. A diverse environment will encourage me to step out of my comfort zone. This will benefit me in becoming a better-rounded person. I have always looked forward to going to college, and being on my own, and learning about life outside my home town. As long as I can remember I have always been curious. I enjoy learning about people, their

Understanding that college is a time of both personal and educational growth, I positively anticipate many things. As an undergrad, I will join organizations and activities while participating actively in them. For academic and language enrichment, I aspire to travel to a Latin American country to study abroad. Also, I aim to be successful in my studies while balancing them with a part-time job. As a result of my hardwork and progression, I desire to obtain an internship as I network with area professionals. Besides focusing on my education, I look forward to finding my purpose. That being said, I am a firm believer that everyone is on this Earth to serve a purpose. As I nurture my skillset and zero in on my interests I look forward to discovering what position within business I am here to serve in. St. Olaf College is where I have had my most profound and impacting experiences interacting and appreciating diversity. In my freshman year, I was assigned to live in a triple dorm room with two other girls, one was a Caucasian from California, and the other was an international student from Vietnam. The vast distinction between us was affirmed from the varying accents that flaunted a richness of cultures to the different paradigms formed from unique experiences. In order to build a strong relationship filled with memories we had to extend ourselves to understand each other despite our differences, appreciate and respect what made us unique. Attending Africa Night, Choir performances Lunar New Year celebration, and so forth were some of the ways we supported each other, opened ourselves to new experiences and solidified our friendship.…

Perhaps one of the most profound things about people, especially the millennial generation, is the incredible acceptance and adaptations found in the face of situation in which we encounter people who are different from ourselves. The ability to mesh with the people around me, and to be a part of a community comes easily to me. I have grown up in a one-of-a kind little town in the mountains of Colorado, and have always been surrounded by people who are both leaps and bounds away from me in our differences, and people I found plenty of things in common with. It is an expanded version of this diversity that I crave in my upcoming college experience. To be able to meet and interact with students from all different walks of life is a major priority as I move into the next chapter of my life.…

What does Diversity and Multiculturalism mean to me? I believe that diversity has become so much more than just the basic qualities of race or gender. It now includes all qualities that make everyone unique, as individuals or as part of a larger group. It is also the acceptance, respect, and understanding of these unique qualities that makes diversity work in a given society. Multiculturalism is the system that is centered around the respect for and the promotion of ethnic and or gender diversity in the society. Multiculturalism is the status of several different ethnic, racial, religious or cultural groups co-existing in the same society. Today, in the U.S. we already live in a diverse, multicultural world, where popular culture has introduced us to others’ foods, music, histories, customs, and more. Moreover, the predictions that a multiplicity of infusions from culture to culture will continue unabated – and that we must develop a respect for others if we are to be active, engaged participants in the new world order (Green, 1998).…
