Many would also say that college sports exist not to make a profit, but to create a community between the different universities. Throwing money at the players would change the mindset of the players making them think as if they are professional players, changing the amateur status. Another big problem with this is, not every college sport is considered as popular as football and basketball. “It’s unfair and wrong to pay football and men’s basketball players because they participate in a sport that generates millions of dollars in revenue but does not pay the thousands upon thousands of student-athletes competing for their schools in other sports” (College athletes shouldn’t get paid). Will all college athletes be given a paycheck? “There is no system of payment that can be put in place that is fair across the board for all students, all sports and all schools that participate in college athletics” (Jackson). Should student athletes get paid? This question has long been debated for quite some time in various institutions and organizations. With the upcoming focus on the NCAA, especially in our own division of the Big East, the question on how players should be compensated is brought up. It is no secret that student athletes are compensated in various ways, whether it is through scholarships or complimentary housing, but questions of paying the student athletes a surplus in addition to tuition costs has been raised. This idea seems appealing to private universities with generous funding because it allows them to attract the top players to their school. College athletes deserve to be paid due to a number of reasons. To begin with, the athletes happen to be the ones responsible for the huge sums of revenue that universities receive from the college athletic competitions (Jonathan, p. 1). The rise in popularity of sports in the American society, coupled with its high profit margin for the colleges due to commercialization has led to creation of much revenue for the universities. It is however very unfortunate that the student-athletes responsible for this, end up without even a penny of the revenue that they helped bring forth. There have also been contracts worth billions of dollars being signed between the universities and various broadcasting stations but the colleges still end up not paying the students. This can be better described as capitalism due to its lop-sided nature where the student-athletes do their best to aid in revenue creation for their universities but get nothing out of it.…

One reason why student athletes should not be paid is the fact that the college experience should be payment enough. In the article, “College Athletes Should Not Be Paid” found in the book Sports and Athletes, the author talks about “the primary function of academic institutions is to educate, and not to hire student-athletes for their contributions on the basketball court or football field” (Meshefejian 99). When high school athletes are approached for their profound athletic abilities, they often choose the university that will open the door for them to pursue a professional career rather than what will provide them with an exceptional education. Meshefejian makes the following statement to prove why students should not be paid for their athletic abilities:…
