Colin Powell Contributions

For me, the selection to write a paper on Retired Former General Colin Powell was not because he was the first African American Joint Chief of Staff under former President George Bush or the first African American Secretary of State under former President George W. Bush or the first African American to serve as a national advisor for former President Ronald Reagan. I see man that is humbly quite with character; he has an impression resume for a person who grew up during very difficult times for African Americans, even though he was an average directionless young man, but his character is what kept him from veering completely course and not succeeding his own goals.
General Powell faced many obstacles from the beginning of his career. He was an average student in high school, but then he found his true calling was serving our country, and he excelled in the United States Army. General Powell
Today, I look at a candidate’s views on community and national issues, leadership qualities and much more. I cannot vote based on party because we have too much to lose if we just look at issues one way. A few years ago, I saw a segment on General Powell when he returned from serving overseas, he every reason to be bitter because he still could not go into restaurants for service, or use the same facilities as Caucasians, but he did not waiver from his willingness to serve this country. This is a person that is willing to serve and protect this country even when some of the people he fought for did not care for him. This is a person that deserves the upmost respect no matter what party he belongs too. In the African American community, he is seen as a sellout because he is part of the Republican Party. He has never proclaimed the Republican Party is perfect and has even spoken out on the shreds of old-fashioned racism of those few in the
