Coefficient Of Kinetic Friction Lab
Coefficient of Kinetic Friction
Objective:
After completing this experiment, you should be able to measure the coefficient of sliding friction of an object that is located on an inclined plane.
Apparatus:
Inclined Plane

Pulley attachment for plane

Wooden blcok, with hook attached

Meterstick

Felt

Set of masses

String

Protractor

Procedure:
1. Place the board in the position shown in Figure 7-1.
2. The angle of the board should be small enough so that the wooden block will not slide down when it is placed on the board.
3. Increase the angle of the board gradually until the block slides down the board at constant velocity when it is given a slight push to start it.
4. Record this angle.
5. Also record the mass of the block as measured with a platform balance.
6. Repeat the above procedure, but place the block on its narrow side instead of its broad side.
7. Measure and record the angle as before.
8. For the third trial, cover the broad side of the block with sandpaper and measure the necessary angle.
9. For the remaining trials, attach a piece of string to the hook on the wooden block and pass the string over the pulley at the upper end of the inclined plane.
10. For trial 4, set the angle of the plane at 5 degree.
11. Attach enough masses to the free end of the string so that the block will slide with constant velocity up the plane when it is given a slight starting push.
12. For Trial 5, increase the angle by 10 degree and repeat the above procedure.
13. Repeat this process at 10 degree intervals until an angle of 55 degree has been reached.
14. Record all data.

The acceleration of block m is 1. greater in case I. 8.1 kN/m 501 g 5.3 cm m 12 044 (part 1 of 3) 10.0 points A block is pushed against the spring with spring constant 8.1 kN/m (located on the lefthand side of the track) and compresses the spring a distance 5.3 cm from its equilibrium position (as shown in the figure below). The block starts at rest, is accelerated by the compressed spring, and slides across a frictionless track except for a small rough area on a horizontal section of the track (as shown in the figure below). It leaves the track horizontally, flies through the air, and subsequently strikes the ground. The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s2 .…

The first thing that you must do is to drop a marble inside the pulley machine. When the marble has dropped into the pulley, the side of the pulley with more force will go down and the one with the least weight will go up. The pully starts out with potential energy, however it changes to kinetic energy because of the force of the marble. The weight of the marble makes the pulley change its position. When the side with more force of the pulley fell towards the ground, it tapped the wheel and axel, and the wheel and axle began spinning. The wheel and axel’s spinning gently triggers the toy car in potential energy to travel down the inclined plane and change into kinetic energy. As quickly as the car fell, it stopped right in front of the lever. The lever has potential energy and it is there to prevent the car from going on and on. When the car stops at the lever, the car pushes the lever with a little bit of force, which triggers the marble to roll out into our second pulley. Our second pulley works similarly to our first pulley. The input force is where the marble falls in and the output force is when the other bucket falls down because of the movement. In this last stage, where the food comes out, the pulley with the heavier weight in it goes down about evenly to the food side of the bucket. The food side of the bucket tilts and all the food rolls down the inclined plane. It rolls down and lands into the food tray, and…
