The vision of the Coalition for a Drug Free Benton County is to provide a forum for exchange of information related to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) in Benton County. The Coalition comes together with the common goal of reducing the incidence, prevalence, costs and consequences of ATOD use and abuse. Success of meeting these goals will improve the quality of life for individuals, families and the Benton County community as a whole.

Millions of Americans have substance use disorders. Millions more people live in households with people who have had problems with alcohol or other drugs has had an impact on them at some point in their lives, whether it was the addiction of a friend or family member or another experience, such as their own personal addiction.

The total expenditure for treatment of substance abuse in the United States was $11.9 billion in 1997. This number does not reflect the costs not directly related to treatment, such as the impact of substance abuse on developing children, productivity, ability to hold a job and earn income, costs due to drug-related crimes, or housing, and other accommodation subsidies.

Impaired driving is no accident. It is a violent crime that kills.

If you find it hard to figure out if you’ve had too many drinks to drive – don’t risk it.
The message is simple – You Drink & Drive. You Lose.
Violators can lose their license, time from their jobs, and lose money in high fines and court costs, as well as face imprisonment for repeat offense, assault and vehicular manslaughter.
Refuse a BAC test and you can lose your license on the spot and have your car impounded. You’ll be spending your money on bail, court, lawyer, and towing fees instead of on your last summer vacation.

Although people have been using and abusing substances for as long as these substances have existed, the study of of addictions with the exception of alcoholism did not really emerge until the 1960's-1970's. Through out the last decade multiple changes to how addiction is viewed have occurred. Due to advances in the medical field and a better understanding of the chemistry of the brain addiction is now viewed as a disease instead of just a lack of morals. Because of the prevalence of wide spread usage of opiods, cocaine, and marijuana in the 60's and 70's more comprehensive research was deemed necessary to not only treat but effectively prevent drug addiction and alcoholism. It was also during this time frame that different classes of substances were created and we see a shift in how drug offenders were handled from the once harsher punishments to required treatment programs.…

Substance abuse and dependency persist as a major health and social concern in America. Author Joseph A. Califano, a former secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare notes, “it is hard to find an American family or circle of friends that substance abuse has not touched directly (Califano, J. A., p. 1, 2008).” Califano further explains that although Americans are 4 percent of the world’s population, Americans consume 65 percent of the world’s illegal drugs. Furthermore, one in four Americans will have an alcohol or drug disorder at some point in his or her life. Most of these individuals have parents, children, siblings, friends, community and colleagues who will “undergo psychological and social harm" (Califano, J. A., p. 1, 2008.).” Authors…

Although you can be arrested with a BAC that is lower than 0.08 percent, a prosecutor will have a harder time proving your impairment. If your BAC is close to 0.07, the prosecutor may be able to argue that it was higher while you were driving and decreased before you were tested. Juries are generally not sympathetic to drunk drivers, so a low BAC does not necessarily mean that you will be able to escape from the charges.…

In New York State, the crime Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) consists of an individual testing a Blood Alcohol Level (BAC) of .08 or higher. Producing a BAC of .05 to .07, or any other evidence of impairment results in Driving While Ability Impaired (DWAI). Both DWI and DWAI offenses carry with it a range of penalties and consequences. First offenders for DWI and DWAI are fined $500-1000 by the DMV, face a maximum jail sentence of one year, and their license is revoked for at least six months. This A misdemeanor is accompanied by additional costs through court surcharges. Two time offenders within 10 years face up to four years in jail and license is revoked for 18 months in addition to receiving an E felony . Aggravated DWI occurs when a motorist operating a vehicle tests .18 BAC or higher. Individuals convicted of this offense (A-DWI) face a year revocation of their driver's license and up to a year in jail. When a driver is stopped by a police officer under the assumption of DWI, it is common that the officer asks the individual to blow into a breathalyzer, a test that records BAC. However, a driver has the option to refuse the breathalyzer, they usually receive an automatic year revocation of their license and civil monetary penalties, higher if a commercial driver. For some drivers, the lengthy suspensions and monetary penalties are not enough. In New York state, pleading guilty or being convicted of a DWI carries a mandatory probation sentence.…

One reason a person should not drink and drive is that they face several consequences as a result of their poor decision. The first is that they lose their license. Without a license, they are no longer able to legally drive on the roads. This forces them to rely on family or friends for a ride, or they must utilize public transportation. If using public transit, they now incur the added inconvenience of adhering to a set schedule instead of being able to travel whenever they want.…

Drunk driving is a very serious subject. After drinking, your driving is impaired and it becomes harder to react to things. In the article, it states that “After alcohol reaches your stomach, it enters your blood and goes to all parts of your body and reaches your brain in 20 to 40 minutes.” The parts of your brain that it effects are the ones that control your judgment and motor skills. After drinking it becomes harder to judge distance, speed, and even to control your car.…

Drunk Driving is a very very stupid decision. Even after one single drink your brain is affected and not at its full ability to think and make decisions properly. At least once in your life you will face a driver who has been drinking. Weather it is on the road or it is someone ready to go get in their car. If you are faced with a person who has been drinking and is about to go get in their car you should try to prevent them from getting in their own car. You could offer to drive them home if you know them, or you could even call them a cab so that they are not the one driving home. If you know you will be drinking that night or know someone that will be drinking that night make sure that you have a safe sober driver to take you home. “If your breath alcohol level is higher than 0.8 you are six more times likely to get into a crash.” After only three drinks you become legally intoxicated; you will also stay drunk if you take a drink every hour after. Not only will you stay drunk, but with every drink you take that night your judgement will become more impaired with every single drink putting you more at risk of crashing than you were one drink ago. If you are pulled over and you do have your license revoked or suspended your sentence for driving can last anywhere from “18 months to 36 months.” Statistics show that “50…
