Let’s meet Alex. Alex is eight years old and is attending third grade. Alex climbs everywhere in his house. Consequently, mom has to constantly take him to the emergency room for a broken finger, arm, leg, or toe. Alex’s big sister complains that Alex bothers her all the time. At school, Alex’s teacher complains about him being disruptive to the class. Alex cannot sit still for five minutes without disturbing another child. Alex climbed up the classroom furniture’s. Alex’s reading and math level were below his grade level. The school suggested Alex’s mom to put him on medicine so he can focus more at school. Mom did not like the idea. The development of these skills can contribute to smoother family life and improved school performance. These skills are also the building blocks for future success (p.1).
One of Alex’s goals is to improve his academic performance. Physical exercise before sitting down to complete homework will help Alex to focus on the homework assignment. Braking assignment into small sections and take a break after each section is complete. Provide extended time for assignment. Another accommodation may be a diet change. Provide Alex food that is low in sugar. Medication might be necessary, however it is not always easy to find right medication that works with a person’s body.
The next goal is for Alex to remember to bring home his homework and homework materials. DuPaul, & Weyandt, (2006) explain “Proactive treatment strategies that have been used successfully for students with AD/HD include choice-making, peer tutoring, and computer-assisted instruction” (p.7). Alex can be assign to peer that would assist him to collect all materials needed and homework and to carry them home. The can program the classroom computer to read a reminder of the items that Alex has to take home for his homework.
