Dear Ms. Heath,

Coach Carter’s experiences with basketball were very helpful in the development of leadership and teamwork when it came to his teaching of the boys’ basketball team in Richmond High. He knew what it was like to go to school in Richmond and what to expect after graduating from the high school. He, however, probably did not know what real teamwork was like, which is why he made sure to give his team that motivation.

Coach Carter’s values further helped his team as a whole and individually. He instilled the value of focusing on education because it would get a person far in life after high school. He was a team builder, inspiring confidence in his players and letting them know through tough love that they could do it and they could be the best. Coach Carter delegated responsibility and was consistent in toughening up to show them that in order to play the game, some things had to be done, including keeping that 2.0 grade point average. Coach Carter was committed to making sure his team not only became the best in the sport he loved, but also become the best in the classroom and learning environment.

Coach Carter quoted “You have to be a great follower before you can ever lead”. This can mean many things but to me, it means that in order for you to be able to step up to leading, you must first learn how to follow. From Coach Carter’s message, I can learn that before trying to become a great leader, I first have to be a great follower. Without being a great educator, I have to be a great learner.

I look forward to becoming a great leader one day like Coach Carter was and still is.

Sincerely,

Aisatou Diallo

Not everyone has it in them to be a great leader. Most people do, but do not accept the challenge. Some people may also believe that they are leaders but are not truly fit or put the position to lead in a way that would be aspiring to others. According to Mrs. Stephanie Fontenot, leadership is one of the most important aspects in the classroom and on the basketball court. As soon as she was asked the question,…

As a player for the Hanford West basketball team, I was placed into situations that required me to step up and be the leader of the team. One of these situations was during a game when our most talented player had been injured. I know my teammates relied on me to be the one to look up to for all the answers. I was certain I would have to go beyond my capabilities to lead this unit to victory. The game started off horribly because of the evident lack of effort from our team. As the commander of this group of young men I knew something had to change. I stepped out of my comfort zone and became very vocal in order to get some motivation pumping through our veins. Every time my teammates made a play I would be sure to acknowledge them in some way, whether it was a high five or a nod. This made me realize feedback is essential when taking on the leadership role in order to boost self the confidence of others. As the game went on we managed to pull off an outstanding team victory.…

John Wooden might have been the coach I needed when participating in Track and Field for my local high school in Madera, CA. Since it was the first and only high school sport I chose to take part in, mostly due to the fact my friends were on the team, I was unfamiliar with what a good coach was and if he or she would actually make an athlete out of me. Reading about Wooden’s dissatisfaction with society’ focus on grades rather than one’s effort and his choice to focus on developing his player’s bodies and minds rather than hounding them to win, I have realized that my Track and Field coach is also one of those men who would have us perform to the best of our ability and lose rather than give a lackluster performance and win simply because of…

When faced with consistent losing early in the basketball season, Coach Dale was able to remain optimistic in what he and the team were doing. He continued to tell the players and the people of Hickory that the team was getting there. He believed that if they continued to work, if they would believe in him, and his philosophy, and Jimmy would come back then they could be a winner. This optimism motivated the players and created an atmosphere of never wanting to…

As a fourth grader, being told that “winning isn’t everything” was a little hard to believe. Only recently do I realize how true this statement is and how important it is to learn this. I believe that in playing sports, what is most important is improving oneself, working as a team, and demonstrating good sportsmanship. Playing CBAA basketball has taught me these values and has played a large role in shaping me into the humble and compassionate person that I am today.…

In Coach Carter’s perceptive, education has a more secure future compared to sports. He also provided a shocking statement that only 50% of the Richmond High School’s students were able to graduate. Other than that, 33% of young African American men between age of eighteen and twenty-four who did not go to college were likely to get arrested. Mentor plays an important role in educating the teenagers to identify the rights and wrong in their lives, so that they will not act impetuously. Soon, Coach Carter found out that his players were playing truant and scored bad grades which had violated the regulations of the contract. Hence, he decided to lock up the gym and suspended their games which resulted in parental opposition. Despite being cursed or criticised, he did not surrender and stood firm with his decision. Consequently, he was fired from the basketball coach position. However, his actions as a caring mentor had motivated the players to study hard. Jason Lyle, one of his player said: “Sir, they can cut the chains off the door, but they can’t make us play.” Coach Carter has changed their mind set and…
