Data Processing: With this lab I have selected to make a data table in which the table includes the quantity of carbon dioxide produced at the end of each trial in mL, the number of trials, standard deviation, variance, and standard error. I have chosen to make a scatter plot for all of the means of the sucrose solutions including the standard error. I’ve decided to process and present my data in this form because the structure of the data table and graph clearly show the carbon dioxide produced in each sucrose solution which is the main focus of this lab. I have chosen to include standard deviation because when recording data because standard deviation helps you comprehend how much a given data point is different from the average (mean), which is helpful in this lab because this will inform you of any outliers in the mean. When finding the difference of the solution at the end of each trial you subtract the initial volume of CO2 from the CO2 produced

The automated calculations performed by excel produced numbers almost the same values as the manual calculations because no rounding was applied until the final answer. Although the randomly generated values have a lower sample mean than the actual data, the sample variance, standard deviation, and standard error were all consistently higher than the actual data. This could be minimized by increasing the number of…

Cell membranes are a bilayer make up of phospholipids, proteins, and cholesterol. Its main function is to regulate what comes in and out of the cell by means of diffusion, transport proteins and protein channels. Trans membrane proteins transport polar solutes across hydrophobic regions of the bilayer. Diffusion occurs when solutes are transferred from a high concentration of that solute to a lower concentration of solutes. Solutes do not depend on the concentration of other solutes, which allows the cell to take in oxygen while releasing carbon dioxide. Osmosis is a special type of diffusion, which occurs when water is diffused across the membrane. This can be affected by how hydrophilic a solute is on either side of the membrane.…

The independent variable for this experiment is the concentration of sugar. The range of the concentration of sugar is 0-100% (inclusive), in intervals of 25%. The chosen range is suitable as it is easy to dilute water with the glucose solutions with the given concentrations and the range is wide enough to see a change in the dependant variable, yet the intervals are equally spaced to allow us to record patterns.…

In support of Lianne's statement, the combustion of gasoline also releases nitrates, and Co2 (g). Co2(g) gas is especially harmful to the environment as it lead to acidic rain problems. Co2 is not removed by catalytic convertors and is therefore released in the atmosphere. Since oxydes of non-metals react with H2O (water) to create an acid, Co2 reacts with water and creates carbonic acid. Carbonic acid then appears in cloud patterns and precipitates into our water system. If the minerals in a lake are not naturally basic to counteract the acidity of the rain then, the pH level of a lake infiltrated by acidic rain can decrease. This change in pH level effects algae at first, however it can trickle upwards in the food chain to effect roe and…

For this analysis project, a 14 ounce (396.3 gram) bag of M&M’s was used to obtain the raw data (observed quantities). The different colored M&M’s were separated into different bowls by color and counted to obtain their individual quantities. I counted all colors three times to reduce error in my analysis. Next, the total was obtained by adding all of the individual quantities of the different colors. The sample size was very large with n=442 individual M&M’s. The observed quantities,…

Baker 's yeast enzymes convert sugar to ethanol and carbon dioxide. Baker 's yeast is cultivated from the strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae because of its superior fermentation abilities. The yeast propagates in pure culture using special culture media comprised of melasse and other ingredients. With respect to their metabolism baker ' yeasts are facultative anaerobe. They can ferment or respire depending upon environmental conditions. In the presence of oxygen respiration takes place, without oxygen present, fermentation occurs. Fermentation is a process by which a living cell, such as…

The goal of this lab was to determine the amount of grams of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) required to produce enough CO2 gas to completely fill the lab and also how many Alka-Seltzer tablets that would equate to. This was done by collecting CO2 gas by inverting a buret and submerging it under water in order to calculate the volume of CO2 released from a fragment of Alka-Seltzer tablet. The main component of Alka-Seltzer is sodium bicarbonate, used to neutralize excess stomach acid during illness through the following reaction that generates CO2:…

The aim of our investigation is to find out whether the use of different sugar isomers with yeast, will affect the rate at which the yeast respires at. The sugars to be tested are fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose and sucrose. Their effects on the respiration rate of yeast to be observed through the measurement (cm3) of the displaced water, which will tell us how much CO2 has been respired over 2 minutes. To compare the effects an average will be calculated for each and a result will be drawn from which we can draw a conclusion as to the effects, if any, of different isomers of sugar, on the respiration rate of yeast.…
