Clinical Mental Health Counselor
There are many environments clinical mental health counselors work in. Gerige mentions a few with I the text; agency/community mental health centers, private practice, substance abuse programs, small college counseling centers, university health services, in the barn, and home/schools. After reading the information, I realized what settings I want to avoid; ones requiring school locations. I do not see myself in a small college counseling center or a university health center. I see myself more in an agency or community setting, working with wide ranges of diagnostics and a large diverse population. There are a few settings not mentioned I could see myself, in the woods, or an art studio. I am highly intrigued with wilderness and arty therapy.

Preparing for my day as professional mental health counselor takes time. When I am leaving work at the end of a busy day, I always take the time to look at my schedule for the next day. The first thing I do to prepare for my job the next day is to look at my schedule to see with whom I will be meeting with, and the time schedule for my first and last appointment. I familiarize myself with the clients I will be working with, and pull each clients file to refresh myself on our last session. This is necessary for me to prepare for the appointment. It is important for me to be prepared and show my client that I am in tune to what is going on with them. I used to do all this first thing in the morning but I have found that it works better for me if I do it at the end of my day. My being prepared helps me to give the client my full attention and helps the client to gain confidence in my abilities. It helps personalize the session between me, as the counselor, and them as the client.…

Becoming a culturally competent counselor is an ongoing process; it is vital that professionals strive to become culturally competent as it would help the counseling process and therapeutic relationship. In order to learn more about other ethnic/racial groups that are different from my own I would need to become more involved in the community, read educational literature about ethnic/racial groups, and engage directly with other ethnic/racial groups. For instance, during times when I travel to other states, I should take advantage of that opportunity and explore ethnic and culture groups. An example of this would be my trip to Pennsylvania, during that vacation, I spend time with people that are Amish. Often times there are activities and…

I understand the Mental Health Peer Program as the first line of defense in preventing, detecting, and helping students understand and solve basic mental health challenges. Educating students is a huge part of what peers do to try and not only prevent mental health from going unnoticed, but also to reduce the stigma that is attached to it. To do this, peers put on programs that bring attention to what a healthy relationship looks like, how to recognize and diffuse stress, and how to start the conversation about mental health. Peers are also in charge of the massage and egg chairs which are open to all students. These are beneficial to anyone who has had a stressful day and just need a couple minutes to wind down and relax. The peers are utilized…

A human service professional serves patients and families in different healthcare and hospice settings. One of the roles of a human service professional is to provide crisis counseling, which means dealing with cases that involve intense and unpleasant emotions (Martin, 2014). Choosing a career is a very important aspect to people 's lives. One goes to college, usually around the age of eighteen, and by the time they leave they are expected to have decided on the career that they will have for the rest of their lives. Being a psychology and interpersonal communication major, I have always had an interest on relationships between individuals given certain stimuli presented to them. I want to have the ability to touch people 's lives by helping them understand themselves and why they behave the way in which they behave. Relationships are such an important aspect to the process of human growth, and they impact each and every one of us. Due to this assessment of myself, I have decided to go to Western Michigan University to pursue my goals of being a clinical social worker.…
