Harsh climates including strong winds, extreme cold to moderately warm temperatures, drought, poor soil nutrition. A dominant species on mountains at tree line. Dry air.

Very cold temperatures and poor soil nutrition. Thrives in the rocky mountain area.

Warm to moderately cool temperatures. Dry air and drought with poor soil nutrition.

Cold temperatures. Thrives in wetland and sub-alpine areas
