Robert is a two-year-old boy who is playing with his toy truck on the kitchen floor. Robert sees a big, black spider crawling across the floor. He has never seen a spider. He begins to move toward the spider. Robert’s mother walks into the room and immediately screams. She grabs a broom and begins beating the spider. Robert is frightened. He cries.

A fear is a rational response to a situation that possibly poses a threat to our safety. It is normal to experience fear in a dangerous situation. Before the summer of 2001, I would compare myself to the Incredible Hulk, The Flash, Wonder Women and all other invincible characters that the media puts forth. But, just like how Superman has his kryptonite I have my weakness too. I saw its colossal, twisted, thin legs griped onto the wall, it had a peanut shaped abdomen and tiny hairs surrounded its body which gave it an eerie aroma, there it was sitting, staring at me, my very own kryptonite, a spider. It is unusual to feel that this small creature has such a tight grip on my actions, even the mere sight of it makes me cringe. In western societies as many as 55% of females have experienced Arachnophobia, the fear of spiders, and although this number makes me feel less deserted it does…

    Book Report The Pearl

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. A fear of something doesn’t necessarily have to come from a physical object, like a spider; a fear could also come from an intangible object, such as change in circumstances. People cope with fears in different ways. Some people choose to hide their fear, while other people choose to face it. In John Steinbeck’s novel, The Pearl, Kino, Juana, and the Doctor all show some type of fear. Kino has more fears then he lets on. Kino, being the man of the house, must act strong and hide his fear, while his wife, Juana, expresses her fear in losing her child. The Doctor who “treated” Coyotito also expresses fear in the loss of his luxury and wealth. The Doctor indulges in his wealth and once Kino and Juana find the pearl, the Doctor heads over to their house to get what wealth he can get his hands on.…

Most of the time, people are afraid of spiders because they've been trained to fear them by their parents and friends. Psychologists Bandera and Rosenthal felt fear reactions are acquired by modeling (Comer, p. 112). Classical conditioning and genetics also come into play (Comer, p. 111-113). I think it is wise to fear spiders; some spiders can inflict a nasty bite as with the brown recluse spider. I know there are ways to overcome your fears such as reconditioning and exposure therapy, but I have no interest in doing that. Exposure treatments that desensitize you are the standard treatments for phobias (Comer, p. 113). But why would anyone want to be exposed to spiders on purpose? If there happens to be a TV show on The National Geographic…
