Chris McCandless was a very bright man. He knew exactly what he was doing and he enjoyed it. The only thing he did wrong was underestimating the Alaskan Wilderness. “ That’s when I had a bad feeling like we wouldn’t never see Alex again.” He was very driven and believed he can accomplish anything, which is very admirable. “ Same story: idealistic, energetic guys who overestimate themselves, underestimate the country.” –Jack London, one of Chris’s favorite authors.…

Finally in Chapter 8, the reader is given insight into the types of letters Krakauer received, after having previously written an article about McCandless, with most of the incoming mail giving harsh criticism on the young traveler's story for being mentally ill, and unprepared. Yet McCandless isn’t the only one to go off on to a far fetched adventure out into the Alaskan wilderness, as one school teacher put it, with Krakauer offering three other examples of others with stories like McCandless. These other stories of Rosellini, Waterman, and McCunn, also prove Christopher McCandless’s uniqueness despite there being similarities between him and of the many others who shared the same philosophy as McCandless. Different in a sense that McCandless,…

Krakauer wrote that Chris McCandless was, "green, and he overestimated his resilience, but was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on a little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice"(Krakauer 182). In this quote it seems that Krakauer thought that McCandless was well equipped with his skills, so that made moderately prepared to survive in any situation. I feel that McCandless was rather prepared, yet again he never could have been fully prepared for the unexpected. My opinion is that McCandless was vaguely aware of the struggles that he would encounter in the Alaskan wilderness such as his epiphany that "happiness is only real when shared" was realized when his body was dying of starvation. I believed that he found what he was…

Christopher McCandless or Alexander Supertramp should be admired for his courage and noble idea to drop everything and go into the wild, with nothing but a backpack and in it was a book of Tolstoy, a book about native plants and berries, a .22 rifle with 400 rounds of ammunition, a writing implement, a journal, a camera, a 10 pound bag of rice, a small cooking utensil, matches, a knife, and some fishing twine and a hook, and the few clothes he had on his back. Chris was trying to find himself by leaving everything behind, yes Chris might have been a little reckless but you have to be a little reckless to go into the wild and hitchhike around the world. This quote support that's chris was just living and trying to find himself was, “...McCandless pitched his tent in the puny shade of a tamarick and basked in his newfound freedom. (Krakauer 27)” this is saying that McCandless was happy to finally be by himself and start life in the wild,…

Chris McCandless made friends easily, and he had a strong effect on people. For instance, Ron Franz had grown so fond of him that he stated, “so I asked Alex if I could adopt him, if he would be my grandson.” (55). When Franz found out of Chris’s death, he went back to his old drinking habits. Chris found love and support in Franz. Also, “Before McCandless and Westerberg went their separate ways, Westerberg told the young man to look him up in Carthage if he ever needed a job.”(17). After a little bit of time getting to know Chris, Westerberg trusted him and respected his hard work. This defines Chris McCandless as hard working and responsible. Lastly, Gallien also cared for him after a few hours of knowing him; “If you make…

He wanted to be like other noble authors like Tolstoy , Jack London, etc. To live up to their expectations. Such as leaving everything behind. He donated all his money to a charity. Then McCandless died being brave and different than other for believing what he thinks is right. McCandless could have lived on and tell his story if he survived none of his favorite authors died doing what McCandless did. Since Chris died attempting to do that he failed others see it as he died doing what he thought was right. He burned his money he had left in pocket why not give it to someone like how he donated the money or was it a fast way to get rid of a plethora of money. In my opinion McCandless is a narcissistic bastard not telling his loved ones that he will be off alone in Alaska.…

Chris McCandless longed for independence and freedom from the life he was living and embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. Jon Krakauer, the author of Into the Wild, begins the book by giving the reader a narration of his journey ,then shortly after changes into a mystery by telling the reader of a dead body found in the bus. The readers can infer that the body found is Chris, giving the reader a feeling that he was crazy for making this venture into the wild and doubt his mental state. Krakauer, then tells the reader of Everett Ruess, a young man who did the same journey and died, giving the reader his view on Chris that he didn’t go out into the wild, because he was crazy but it was more for his own good as a person. McCandless early year of his life was abusive and unsettling because his father abused him in many ways that only siblings and he can explain. His father also had another family and impacted McCandless. McCandless could express it. Growing up, his family wanted the best for him. His parents believed that they could buy his respect. McCandless thought other. Overall, Chris McCandless’s childhood wasn’t the best. His journey was the highlight of his life until it came to the end. He was poisoned and suffered for many days with an illness of starvation and was barely able to stand up. During his last days, Chris McCandless writes, “‘I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL!’” (Krakauer 199). Chris McCandless finally opened eyes to see what he had in front of him because he realized that his family did care for him and that the people he met along the way gave him happiness, but was too much of a fool to realize. Another most obvious reason for Chris McCandless being a fool for him leaving his life. He left his family, money and career behind to go chase his goal to Alaska. It was awfully nice of him to donate his money to charity, but he lost everything he…

He is writing a check to the Oxfam charity along with a note that says, “The are all my savings. Feed someone with it.” The criminal vibe fades. It could be said that donating his money was a risk benefitting others – a trait of a hero. But then, after briefly glancing at a picture of his parents, Chris tosses it into the trash, complicating his persona even more. This act is symbolic of Chris severing ties with his parents and leaving for his journey without notifying them. Casually discarding their photo is not a great way for Chris to show gratitude to the people who paid for his college tuition and offered to buy him a new car and pay for grad school. Sure, his parents had their domestic disputes that traumatized Chris as we find out later in the film, but it hardly warranted an ice cold shunning from their son. Chris now seems like an ungrateful…
