Christian Service Project

As apart of my service, I assisted in helping the community as well as others through the Notre Dame Annual Pilgrimage, Harvest Kitchen at St. Kevin’s Roman Catholic Church and participating in the Notre Dame Walk Against Male Violence. In October of 2010, I walked and raised money for the annual Pilgrimage at our school which involved trudging the distance from our school to the Allenburg Bridge. The money raised assisted those in third world countries mainly going to a facility called Yancana Huasy intended for the use by mentally and physically challenge young adults. The money is also sent to Haiti, Peru and the Dominican. As a volunteer for Harvest Kitchen my responsibility was to help deliver the meals to the people as well as work the handicap elevator in order to assist immobile people. Other duties included clearing dishes, socializing with others, setting up and serving food and drinks. Lastly, I also participated in the Walk Against Male Violence in which I was required to raise money and walk the 5 Kilometers as a method of raising awareness and money for abused women.

As a volunteer helping with Harvest Kitchen I was shocked to realize the amount of people in our community that come from all walks of life, adults, elders, and children that need assistance. These people are people that when looking at them walking on the street you would never know the situations they come from or what they need to do in order to survive. It also helped solidify a previous lesson I learned when it comes to judging others, “you can never judge a book by its cover”. This lesson has stuck with me throughout my life and throughout my service work; a person is a person, no matter the situation or social class they come from. As human beings we all need love and desire someone to relate to. When helping with Harvest Kitchen I knew that we were all equal and the fact that those who needed help were humble enough to seek assistance in order to

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

many of those who call themselves preachers of the gospel today must learn the meaning of this expression of God's word. This is because real battlefields have been caught in the outreach activities of the churches, in the sense of attack with aggressive words the hearers of Christ's gospel. When we say that the gospel of grace means "good news" is because it must be nice to be…

Once I was pressed with the question of where and how I see God, I couldn’t stop thinking about where I could have experienced such a thing, because seeing and feeling god is not an easy thing, simply because you can’t feel his being or see him as a person, but that's when the concept of faith comes in, believing and trusting in something like our lord, even when things are imperfect, or even when things are amazing, I could say I see god in simple things, like how he made the wind and sea, or things like my friends and my family, but for me it's so much more than that, God can be a close friend, a father, and something anyone could talk to through prayer, but sometimes it's not…

The homeless people I served meals to hated being there. They hated the cloths they wore. They hated having to be feed in order to live. The homeless people there were not like the ones who beg on the street for money. These people were unfortunate to be in there situation, and they were trying to get back on there feet. Their purpose of being at Faith City was to change their life around. I could tell that they did not see many volunteers there, so they were grateful for me for caring for there poor souls. These people never take anything for granted because everything in their life is a struggle. Anything donated will never go to waste, but it will get used to its last straw. The homeless know that they do not get much opportunity so they have to make the most of everything. That is what the taught me, and that is how I want to life my life after this…

Last Thursday we went to the Stone Soup kitchen to help for prepare a meal for homeless. My initial expectations were cooking from scratch and washing dishes. I was so excited not just because I enjoy cooking, but because I would help to feed hungry people. As soon as we arrived, the chef introduced herself and told us about how Stone Soup help people in need. Then she told us about the dishes they would serve to people. My first mission was brushing bread with a mixture of butter, garlic and parsley. Then, I brought some ice, carried the dessert close to the serve window, and pour many dozens of milk in pitchers. That duties were so easy; in fact, I did expect that at all. So, after doing that duties, I realize this volunteering…

Peter teaches us, followers of Christ, key things to truly follow Christ. In 1 Peter, he stresses that Christians are to be God 's obedient children, "chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, God 's own people" (1:14). Us as Christians are striving to be a “human-like” Jesus if you will. We are God’s people on Earth doing his work for the work of Him. One example of a true believer is that you have encountered the true and living God and that you have undergone a change in your heart and soul. Another is realizing that the sacrifice of Christ alone for the forgiveness of his sins, then the Holy Spirit has come and lives in that person. The last example of being a true believer is that you are changed on the inside, not controlled from the outside. It means that your heart has been changed by the presence of God. These are just a couple of definitions that define a true follower. In the CCC 916 it states: “…to give themselves to God who is loved above all and, pursuing the perfection of charity in the service of the Kingdom, to signify and proclaim in the Church the glory of the world to come.” This paragraph supports Peter’s teachings about being a true follower of Christ.…

I have been so blessed with a healthy and financially stable family and because of that I feel as though I need to give back. I have seen first hand the effects that living in a negative environment have on a child. My own cousin has been the victim of her mother’s poor decisions. Watching this first hand has been very difficult for me and sadly I’m seeing her actions resembling her mothers as she grows up. I know there are kids my age who feel they have no other choice but to do exactly what their parents have done. It always hurts my heart to see kids struggle because of the poor choices their parents have made. Of course, not all parents living in low-income situations have made poor decisions in their life, but the children who are suffering because their parent’s actions, I feel; need to know they can make a better life for themselves. Many of these high school students probably haven’t seen anything outside of Pontiac. I want them to know there is more out there for him. I want to see these kids…

Moreover, I believe that judgement within direct service is a key challenge that effects many lives. Some citizens may not reach out for assistance because they feel embarrassed to admit they’re struggling. Through my experiences, I also believe that we, as servants, sometimes fall victim to judging the less fortunate. Even though this challenge is prevalent, I believe it can be combated if we adapt Mother Teresa’s ideology that “if you judge people, you have no time to love them.”…

Alyda Reyes, a staff member of the church, Centro Vida, and a student pastor of its student ministry, was able to provide insights in regards to the ministry. When she attended Bible College, the church provided her an opportunity to serve within the church. She is under Pastor Jonathan Shivers, who is in charge of all student involvements, and Pastor Jonathan Shivers and Alyda Reyes are under the Senior Pastor, John Shivers. The interview went well, straightforward, and quick. I was unable to reach the overseeing pastor of all of the youth pastors since he was busy: we recently successfully finished our first student conference. Alyda is one of a couple pastors teaching the young people. Pastor Jonathan thought it was effective to have multiple student pastors to aid him in pastoring the student ministry of 150 students. For several years, Alyda has overseen the student ministry under Pastor Jonathan.…

It is unfair for us to get whatever we want for Christmas, but homeless people don’t get anything at all. The homeless need to feel loved during this holiday season. Many people in society do not pay attention to the problems of homelessness; they do not care about the poor and forgotten. The Spiritans are known for helping the poor and forgotten members of the world. As students in a Spirian school, we both want to help the poor and forgotten of the world. The charisms we both have to offer are compassion. We are compassionate people that truly care for others. We also are good listeners, and can listen to the poor people and their stories and offer them love. We are doing this project not just because we have to do it, but we want to do it. We feel compelled to do this, for the good of others. We want to make a change in our community even its small. The Spiritans do the work that many do not want to do. That is exactly what Conor and I are going to do in our…

With the money we help raise, World Vision sends vaccines, clean water, and food to villages that are in need of health supplies. During our famine, we fast for 30 hours to get a small taste of what hungry people around the world feel like when they have no means of getting food. This service has really opened up my eyes to the poverty that happens not only to the children in Asia or Africa, but people in my own community.…

The religion that I chose to do my paper on was Judaism. Throughout every religion people are expected to follow various rituals and understand important symbols. In particular the beliefs of Judaism include highly respected days and symbols that most members value and that most members are expected to follow and understand. The history of the Jewish religion over time has created different ceremonies, holidays, and expectations to practice. Judaism began with the covenant God made with Abraham. He was told to bring forth a separate nation unto Yahweh. He was first in his line to worship God. Judaism is largely defined in the first five books of the Bible that are credited to Moses as having been written. Many days of observation help people to reflect their beliefs about Jewish practices. Rituals in any religion help followers to evaluate themselves and allow members to come to have a better connection with their beliefs. Judaism includes the rituals of the Sabbath, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Hanukkah, Shvat, Purim, Passover, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and more.…
