Chili and Kamias
Abstract:
Chili (Capsicum frutescens) is commonly used as a food spice because of its hot and spicy taste. It was later discovered that chili has pesticide property that can be used to kill mosquitoes. Kamias (Hedychium cornarium) which is also used as food spice was also discovered to have properties that of astringent, stomachic, refrigerant & antiscorbutic.

Chapter I 1. Introduction and Its Background
The pesticide property of chili makes it a good basis for making this spice a good mosquito killer. Added with kamias and its chemical properties, a potent mosquito killer can be produced.

2. Statement of the Problem
This study aims the following: a. to find out if said mosquito killer is effective b. to determine if cost involve is more economical compared to the commercially produced pesticide/insecticide c. to establish that the mosquito killer when used does not have any adverse effect on human

3. Formulation of the Hypothesis i. This mosquito killer is effective when used. ii. The production of this mosquito killer is more economical compared to the commercially prepared ones.

4. Significant of the Study
This study was made to prove that both chili and kamias can be combined to make a potent and effective mosquito killer. Given the fact that we have abundant resources of these two spices, any ordinary person can formulate and produce this natural insecticide. Best of all, its’ cheap, economical and proven effective and safe.

5. Scope and Delimitation of the Study
The scope of this study is based on the formulation and application of both chili and kamias extracts to mosquitoes.

6. Definition of Terms
Antiscorbutic: a remedy for scurvy
Astringent: substance is a chemical compound that tends to shrink or constrict body tissues, usually locally after topical medicinal application astringent,

Pesticide: any chemical substance used for killing pests, as insects
Stomachic: is one that

ABSTRACT: Background: The introduction of West Nile virus in Canada is changing the perception that mosquitoes are nothing more than nuisance pests. Interest is increasing in ways to protect against mosquitoes. One of the commonest is the use of insect repellents. Methods: Tests were undertaken to determine the effectiveness of three mosquito repellents: 95% DEET, Avon Skin So Soft bath oil, and a “special mixture” of substances thought to have insect repellent qualities. The repellents were compared with each other and against a placebo in eight separate test sessions. During each session, the three repellents and placebo were tested simultaneously. Each session lasted between 90 and 120 minutes. After every session, the repellents were thoroughly washed from the test site and a minimum of 72 hours elapsed between tests. There were four test sites: the author’s right arm, left arm, right leg, and left leg. All test…

Mosquito’s abound in tropical countries like the Philippines. They have been pestering land vertebrates for millions of years. Insecticides are either too harmful to both man and the environment or too expensive for the consumers. The purpose of this study is to create an environment-friendly, safe, effective and cheap mosquito repellant. Weeping willow leaves, tubang bakod seeds, tubang bakod seed hulls, onion peelings and almaciga sap were collected. The solid ones were pulverized and mixed together in three pans in 1:1:1:2:4 ratio. Two of the pans were given different amounts of the oil extracted from tubang bakod seed while the remaining one was given none. The mixtures were allowed to dry and were tested on mosquitoes for effectivity and on humans for acceptability. The results showed that tubang bakod has a significant repelling effect on mosquitoes.…

Given the recent surge of the West Nile virus spread by infected mosquitoes, it is interesting to explore the value of garlic as one more method for avoiding mosquito bites. A number of studies have shown that the oil fraction of garlic destroys certain species of mosquito larvae. Garlic sprays (made primarily with garlic extract) are available on the market for use on plants as an alternative botanical pesticide to chemical pesticides. The sulfurs contained within the garlic extract have been shown to be effective against a wide range of insects, including mosquitoes, and the lingering odor can deter mosquitoes from the area for weeks.…

Nowadays ,people can’t oppose the boosting of the countless pests and insects that disturb our daily habits. Controlling of insects and pests is one of the main problems of most farmers and gardeners. So, instead of buying commercial and expensive inorganic insecticides, an alternative and economical insect repellant made up of the sap of euphorbia plant, garlic, and siling labuyo, all natural insecticides derived from different plants which could kill insects and pests. The garlic (alluim sactium) that used for both ordinary and medicinal purposes and even as natural flavoring, could also be a benefit to make an insecticide. The property of garlic that is considered as an effective chemical that can kill insects and pests is its ALICIN, it is not seen in its natural state but when shopped and crushed, the enzyme ALLINASE acts on the chemical ALLIIN converting it to ALLICIN. ALIIN is an amino acid that doesn’t build proteins. Thus, it could kill insects becauseof its smell which humans dislike too. Furthermore, the garlic helps the insecticide to be more secure and natural. For the siling labuyo(capsicum annuum)which can be purchased at any markets, was also proved to an efficient ingredient in making an insect repellant. It has an active component known as CAPSAICIN . It was said to be an irritant for animals that causes a perception of burning of tissues. Capsaicin is the primary ingredient of pepper sprays. While in the other hand, the sap of euphorbia plant (euphorbia leucocephala), a cactus-like plant with spiny and succulent stems and flowers that are solitary, short and colorful. Base from the researchers, the euphorbia plant has a poisonous principle in all parts and it can be an active component in making an insecticide because it’s high toxicity. It may intense inflammation of the skin and eye to the person or animals that will be affected by…
