Chemical Reactions of Copper
Objective
The objective of this lab is to convert copper (Cu0) “in a series of reactions to various compound containing copper as the Cu2+ species” (CHM111 Laboratory Manual) in order to prove the Law of the Conservation of Mass.

Introduction In this experiment, we took a look at how copper (Cu0) reacts with different substances to get an end result where it is transformed back to its original state. There were five different reactions that involved copper. We first experimented with copper metal and converted it to copper (II) nitrate. We then converted copper (II) nitrate to copper (II) hydroxide. Next, we converted copper (II) hydroxide to copper (II) oxide. After that, out next conversion was from copper (II) oxide to copper (II) sulfate. Our last conversion was from copper (II) sulfate back to a copper metal. During each experiment, we will write down observations seen during the chemical reactions. Some reaction will change colors. Others will generate heat. Our goal for this experiment is to “verify the Law of the Conservation of Mass” (CHM111 Laboratory Manual).
Procedure
The procedure for this experiment was followed using the guidelines found in CHL111 General Chemistry I Laboratory Manual Fall 2013, Chemical Reactions of Copper.

The objective of this experiment was to identify the unknown pure copper salt compound of #9. To do this, the mass of copper in the unknown was calculated and then divided by the mass of the whole compound to get the percent copper. The molecular weight was also calculated by dividing mass of copper compound used by moles of compound in unknown sample. The percent copper averaged out to 31.6% while the molecular weight of the sample averaged out to 201.1mw. In conclusion, the unknown compound of pure copper salt was close to Cu(C2H3O2)2 •H2O which has a percent copper of 31.8% and a molecular weight of 199.654mw.…

Aspect 3: In each of our labs, we made mistakes, so not all of our results came out 100% accurate. In our first lab, we could have improved our results by using a more accurate scale or being more careful when attempting to release the gases. In the second lab, our ratios may have been off because the crème or the cookie was still attached to the other. We could fix this by freezing the cookies before the lab to prevent the crème from sticking to the cookies. In the final lab, my partner and I came closer to the correct percentage, of 39.17%, than our class’ average did. The reason our percentage could have been off may have been because we did not heat the material long…

To explore the cycle of copper through many chemical reactions. What we are going to do is take a piece of copper metal put it through a series of reactions that change it¡¦s state of matter and chemical formula, but in the end, we will return it to it¡¦s normal solid state. Determine the percentage yield (quantitative). Define what happen at level of electron for oxidation/reduction, double replacement, neutralization and decomposition. There are five reactions that the copper will go through.…

One of the most fundamental statements of the atomic theory is that elements combine in simple whole number ratios. This observation gives support to the theory of atoms, since no one would expect atoms to combine. It is observed that the combining ratio for a given compound is constant…

In this experiment, the objective was to conduct a series of chemical reactions that contain copper or copper compounds. That is to say that the products of each chemical reaction were used in the next reaction. The process starts with a solid copper wire dissolved in nitric acid and the end product is copper powder. The product which was used from the previous reaction is the limiting. In the initial step, the solid copper is the limiting reactant. For this experiment, the materials that will be used are copper wire, aluminum wire, six molar nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, six molar hydrochloric acid, a vacuum filtration apparatus, and ice.…

In the experiment, synthesis of copper compounds, the purpose was to recover the original amount of copper after series of chemical reactions. Then returning the copper back to its original form. The copper wire originally weighted 1.0099 g, but after the copper was transformed into Cu(OH)2 to CuO to CuSO4 and finally into Cu, the mass of the recovered copper was 1.1023g; the percent yield was 109%. Since the percent yield is more than 100%, an error must have occurred somewhere in the lab. A possible error could have occurred due to removing the evaporating dish from the Bunsen burner quickly not allowing all the water to be evaporated. Therefore, there was water present in the final mass and it could have caused the percent yield to be greater…

For this experiment to occur, the limiting and the excess reagents needed to be determined. The limiting reagent was picked based upon the single displacement that was going to occur when the two substances, iron and copper(II)sulfate, were mixed together in water. Seeing that iron was going to displace copper and take its place, it was chosen to be the limiting reagent with the condition that if it was in excess then after the displacement was completed, there will be iron precipitate left in the solution thus, we will not be able to identify and filter the copper metal. To weigh the amount of copper produced after it was filtered it first needed to dry out, if it was not dried out then it will not be 100% copper and will have…

Metals high up in the reactivity series - such as calcium - have carbonates that need a lot of energy to decompose them. Metals low down in the reactivity series - such as copper - have carbonates that are easily decomposed. This is why copper carbonate is often used at school to show these reactions. It is easily decomposed, and its colour change, from green copper carbonate to black copper oxide, is easy to see…
