Years ago, there was once a small town called Chaves Ravine within Los Angeles, California and this town was a poor rural community that was always full of life. Two hundred families, mostly Chicano families, were living here quite peacefully until the Housing Act of 1949 was passed. The Federal Housing Act of 1949 granted money to cities from the federal government to build public housing projects for the low income. Los Angeles was one of the first cities to receive the funds for project. Unfortunately, Chavez Ravine was one of the sites chosen for the housing project, so, to prepare for the construction work of the low-income apartments, the Housing Authority of Los Angeles had to convince the people of the ravine to leave, or forcibly oust them from their property. Since Chavez Ravine was to be used for public use, the Housing Authority of Los Angeles was able seize and buy Chavez Ravine from the property owners and evict whoever stayed behind with the help of Eminent Domain. The LA Housing Authority had told the inhabitants that low-income housing was to be built on the land, but, because of a sequence of events, the public housing project was never built there and instead Dodgers Stadium was built on Chavez Ravine. Although Chavez Ravine public housing project was the result of the goodwill and intent of the government, rather than helping the people Chavez Ravine with their promise of low-income housing, the project ended up destroying many…

This obscure canyon is a highly colorful, deep slash in the earth that keeps its many charms secret to all but a handful of Eastern Sierra visitors. California’s San Joaquin Valley is highly recognized for its abundance in agriculture. Hispanics and Latinos make up about more than half the population in Tulare County, many of who are field workers. The prevalence of undocumented people and low-income earners in Tulare County forces them to be unable to remove themselves from living in low-income communities. About 95% of people in the San Joaquin Valley rely on groundwater for drinking. The agricultural use of intensive irrigation systems allows fertilizers to leach into nearby water systems. By researching the prevalence of nitrates, forms when nitrogen fertilizer enters water systems, in Tulare County, examining the various factors and players involved, I will demonstrate how this affects…
After World War II, the Barrio Logan community became and industry mess from junkyards to metals and other toxic businesses that were affecting the community by creating air pollution. There was constant construction around the area causing loud noises. The city became careless for the location and the community was getting tired of it and refused tolerate it anymore. Nico. They call me Nico. Well my full name is Nicolas Santiago Chavez. I live in Inglewood, California with my mama and papa. We are very family oriented for “la familia es amor.” Growing up in Inglewood, life hasn't always been facil. We live in a neighborhood known as Sunnyside Park, though it isn’t the sunniest place to live in. I didn’t have many friends growing up except for the kids on the cross country team. Also, I would play with the neighborhood kids, we called ourselves los chicos malos. We had been together since we were seven. Everyone knew who we were, we were like brothers. Growing up my papa always taught me two important lessons “never forget where you came from , when you make it big one day” and “Inglewood isn't the safest place so survive with instinct not heart.”…
In 1940, the American economy was beginning to stabilize from the previous decade of “Great Depression”, in which home foreclosures, unemployment, and hunger was rampant among families across the United States. The continuous Anti-Mexican sentiment was still a popular theme in the United States as noted by the exclusion from President’s Roosevelt’s “New Deal”, repatriation (arbitrary deportation), and propagated segregation. Housing segregation of Mexican-Americans led to the formation of “Barrio’s” and tight knit communities, as housing options were unavailable in many areas. In various instances, home owners stipulated that homes in a particular zip code not be leased to Mexicans; properties for sale also had similar and lengthy stipulations…
The members of the group are Mexican-Americans. They moved to Hidalgo County that lies across the border from Mexico in the valley of the lower Rio Grande of southeastern Texas. Hidalgo and Cameron counties have been known as the “Valley of Tears” but others call it as the “Magic Valley”. It had a very fertile agricultural land and more job opportunities. Seventy-five percent of the population of Hidalgo County is Mexican-American. They consider themselves to be true Texans. They sometimes refer to English-speaking residents as “foreigners,” because Rio Grande Valley was settled by Spaniards and Mexicans about a century before first US settlers came. The reason why Mexicans colonized Rio Grande Valley was to protect people from Indian raids and encroachment from New France.…
In the United States, upward mobility and social status are predicated on living apart from racial and economic groups considered inferior.’(Sharp and Wallock 1949:9) Although individual acts of resistance may be malicious, some may simply be due to concerns about depreciation of property value, resulting in the strengthen of the color line through de facto residential segregation. Nowadays, as a result of long-going white privilege in housing, blacks are exposed to hazardous environment due to historic restriction to mobility. Latinos are exposed to the same environment mainly because of their working class and immigration status since most Latino immigrants are blue collar labor with merely no economic advantage and even they are able to afford the price of houses in suburban areas they are often diverted from neighborhood free of industrial pollution (mainly white neighborhood) by real estate agents due to discrimination in housing market. What’s more, with the development of suburbs area, well-financed factory, which uses advance technology and has relatively low level of pollution, chose to move out of central Los Angeles, leaving the areas, which were mainly occupied by blacks and…
