Chase Case Study
1. Identify his instructional level based on the assessment information that you have available. Provide a rationale for the level using either Caldwell and Leslie or Lipson and Wixson.

Chase’s reading-instructional level is that of a Third-Grade Text according to Caldwell and Leslie and the data provided. Chase has achieved control over most letters and sounds and has a relatively large sight vocabulary. However, the assessment indicates he needs more time to develop strategies to decode unfamiliar words, especially multi-syllabic words.

When considering a pull out program Chase would benefit with instruction including the focus on decoding multisyllabic words, comprehension strategies, and fluency, providing a balanced intervention structure. The format of the intervention should be daily for a minimum of 30 minutes a day. The first five minutes should consist of words study skills using analogies, affixes, familiar spelling patterns, and discuss meaning of the word. When reading for meaning, read a short new texts together in a shared oral format, incorporating a variety of comprehension strategies to monitor understanding (visualizing, reread, slow down, ask yourself questions before, during, and after reading. Use discussion cards as cues to talk about the text. The final five minutes the students should reread the text to practice reading the new words and improve fluency. Fountas and Pinnell’s, Leveled Learning Intervention would fit nicely into this format. The Guided Reading program would also be great resource.

    Based on the San Diego Quick Assessment, Jane appears to be below her grade level expectations. Her independent level results were between a pre-primer and a primer.
