Chapter Summary: A Separate Peace By John Knowles

Gene looked up to everything Finny did. Whatever Finny did, Gene felt that he needed to follow his lead and do the same thing. Finny easily convinced Gene to jump out of the tree after diving in the water.

Competitive
Gene was both competitive with sports and academics. He was determined to get the best grades and become the top student in his classes.

Insecure and Resentful
Gene struggled being his own person. He was always looking at things that Finny was doing, and was comparing himself to other people. He felt like he wasn't as good of a person as Finny, and that if he tried to be better that Finny was out to get him. He resented Finny for supposedly trying to sabotage him.This is why Gene intentionally shook the tree to …show more content…
He especially takes pride in his snail collection, and also enjoys skiing around the campus to find a beaver dam that not many people knew about.

Timid
Leper can also be very timid and scared at times. He refused to jump out of the tree the first time they stumbled upon it. After that, he wanted to prove to himself and his friends that he could do it so he told everyone he was going to jump. However, when they got to the tree he backed out.

Shy
Leper is an incredibly shy person that takes a while to understand. Leper stuck to his friend group and was not interested in making new friends.

Stubborn
Leper is also strikingly stubborn. This is mostly during a conversation when he refuses to change the subject. When you start a conversation with Leper he will stay on the same subject until the conversation is over.

Nervous
Leper is nervous, but especially in the service. When he joined the ski patrol, he did not know what he was getting himself into. It was a totally different atmosphere he got barely, if any sleep. He started acting different and was uncontrollable. This led him to later be released to Section …show more content…
One of the first events that happened at this setting is that Gene and Finny started jumping off the tree's branch and into the river. One time, Gene almost lost his balance, but thankfully Finny was there to steady him. However, another time when Gene and Finny were climbing the tree together Gene purposely shook the branch and Finny plummeted to the ground, shattering his leg.

    The most significant of these troubles is, without a doubt, Gene’s struggle with his own identity. At first Gene is displeased with his personality, or lack thereof. He envies his best friend, Phineas’ (Finny’s), wit, charm, and leadership. Throughout the book, Gene repeatedly finds himself acting like his friend, a transformation occurring that Gene is unaware of. There are a number of significant transformations within this story.     At one point in your life you will be jealous of someone else and you are going to want what they have. Gene’s emotions are very mixed throughout the book when he is around Finny but I think the overall emotion he has is jealousy and envy of Finny “I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything.     The novel A Separate Peace is a story about two best friends, Gene and Phineas (Finny), who both attend the Devon school in New Hampshire in 1942.
