Abstract Page
This essay tells about how hurricanes are formed and the damages that they have on life and property. It tells how hurricanes are classified into five different categories depending on the speed of wind and their potential to cause damage. Also tells about the cause and effects of hurricanes. The essay gives examples of two powerful hurricanes that struck the US. Of the hurricanes were the most costliest which was Hurricane Katrina that hit New Orleans and Hurricane Andrew that was the most powerful to hit South Florida in over 30 years.
Hurricanes are one of the most destructive natural disasters. They are very powerful and dangerous storms. Hurricanes usually start over warm sea near the equator. Even though these tropical storms also known as hurricanes start off weak, they can strengthen causing lots of damages and the lives of others.
There are two factors that are responsible for causing hurricanes .Warm water and moist, warm air are the factors. When the moist warm air from the surface rises to meet cooler air hurricanes are formed, a hurricane is classified into five categories based on wind speeds and their potential to cause damages .A category one is the weakest with winds of 74-95 mph and a category 5 being the strongest with winds greater than 155 mph. Hurricanes usually occurs in the late summer.it mainly occurs in the summer because of the difference between sea temperature and seasonal basin pattern within each distinguished time zone .May is the least active hurricane month and September is the most active hurricane month. Other names for hurricanes are typhoons and tropical depressions.
Once a hurricane has formed they have names for them. The names are used to help meteorologist to identify and track them as they move across the ocean. For hurricanes that occur in the Atlantic Ocean the names may be Spanish, English or
