Catalina Concert Report
I went to Catalina Bar & Grill which located at Sunset Blvd, Hollywood to see a Jazz concert, featuring Kevin O’Neal and Patrice Quinn, along with Oscar Hernandez, Sid Jacobs and Aaron Serfaty on Thursday, Mar 06, 2014. My roommate and me were lost and once and had a hard time trying to locate Catalina but fortunately we made it on time anyway. According to our professor the club is a nice place and indeed I have to admit that after I taste the food there. We finished our delicious dinner and wait for the concert to begin.
The performance started at about nine o’clock. On that night professor O’Neal was doing a lot of jobs including a bass guitar player, singer, and the composer of this concert. He received rounds of applause as soon as he stood on the stage. There was twelve pieces of melody in this brilliant performance. The first song was “Black Butterfly,” and of course the composer is professor Kevin O’Neal who also started with a bass solo, and later on, piano and drum with a fast beat changed the slow bass beat, and then all the three instrument joined together. I think this piece of music was showing the beautiful black butterfly’s journey of life. It made me wonder the taste of nature and the freedom in the sky.
The following pieces are “The way you look tonight,” which composed by Jerome Kers and Lyric by Dorothy Fields, “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” by Gershwin&Gershwin, and “Now Or Never” with the composer Holiday, C.R. Lewis. These three melody’s beat was no real difference with the first song, but those three melodies were in a similar theme, which was about the beautiful sad/ romantic love. The singer Patrice Quinn’s singing was really catching to my ear that was really relax and unique. Her voice fully filled this beautiful place until the melody ended.
The rests of the songs, “Pannonica”, “Ceora”, “There For You”, “Ball & Chain”, “California Soul”, “Save A Thought For Me” and the last piece “Expectation” are

As the show goes on, Clara sings a song called “The Beauty Is”which is her telling you of what she's experiencing for the first time somewhere new. After she meets fabrizio, and he's fallen in love, he goes on to sing a song in full italian called “Il Mondo Era Vuoto”. This song is all about how Clara fills the “light” in his life that he was always missing. Its truly a beautiful and one of the most passionate songs in the show. The way it is written shows precisie emotions and you can almost understand the message without the text being sung along. Fabrizio asks Clara on a walk in the piazza. There, he serenades her with a fun song “Passeggiata” to show her of the place he knows the best, Italy. As Clara and Fabrizio's love grows, Margaret's and Roys (her husband's) dies. Margaret towards the end of the first act sings a song of falling out of love with her husband and reminiscing on the beautiful times they shared when they were in love by singing “Dividing Day”. This song by far is the most passionate, sad, and most beautiful song I have ever heard throughout the musical theater realm. There are many…

    Ricky Z Critique

Unfortunately, I had class at the start of the event on Thursday night, as a result I only got to catch and listen to the end of Ricky Z's set, but I loved what little of it I heard. When I was at the block party I heard three songs performed by Ricky Z's and his band. I was excited because I knew two out of the three songs played. The two songs I knew were, Piano Man and The Way It Is. Although Piano Man was a Billy Joel song, The Way It Is was a song from a band the Range, sang by Bruce Hornsby. Either way I was still happy I knew at least two songs. This was not your typical musical performance I would be subject to at the Lunch Hour Series. Instead of listening to a musical performance inside the music room, the performance was outside which was a nice change of scenery. Due to the performance being outside spectators had room to dance along with the music and everyone seemed to being enjoying that aspect.…

I went to see Overture to King Stephen, Op. 117 and Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36, both composed by Ludwig van Beethoven and performed by Los Angeles Philharmonic at Disney Hall on December 31 2012. The music group consisted of about sixty-three bowed string instrumentalists, ten woodwind instrumentalists, nine brass instrumentalists and four percussion instruments and the conductor is Esa-Pekka Salonen.…

    Salsa Jazz Concert Report

It’s not really the type of concert I would have typically gone to for fun but I did enjoy myself. I think the fact that it was salsa made it more interesting since I am Hispanic. I caught myself bobbing my head to the rhythm, clapping my hands, and tapping my foot in some of the performances. One of my friends was in the concert so it was nice to see him play on the drums and how he had a solo. Also another guy from my jazz class was in the concert and he played very well and it was riveting to see the way he played his solo on the sax. I don’t know if I would ever go to another jazz concert for fun but who knows maybe I would if it was a salsa one. I am glad that I got to go and see this because I probably would not have experienced this if it wasn’t because I had to. It did open up my eyes more to the world of jazz and seeing how different it is to see them playing live than from a computer or just listening to the songs. To see it all happening was fascinating. I would tell anyone that they should go some time in their life to a jazz concert, specifically a salsa one. If I out of everyone enjoyed it than anyone…

Dekutoski said the experience was packed with pleasurable surprises. “I didn’t know about the yacht until they sent out the itinerary with all the music and other information, but when I heard about it, I was so pumped. So after the concert, we got to see our parents and go out to dinner and get out of our concert attire,so after that, we boarded some buses that took us to a pier, and we got boarded on the yacht. There was a dance floor, four different decks, food and drinks, blaring music and it wasn’t too cold to go outside for a while. It was so…

Unlike the first concert I went to a few months ago this one actually grabbed my attention. Every ensemble was very talented and something different to bring to the table. The many songs performed in the concert were all very well put together pieces. Though out of the eleven songs played I picked three of which I really enjoyed the most. All three songs were performed by the first ensemble directed by Mark Buselli. The first song was That Old Black Magic. The song contained a brief saxophone solo that was played very swiftly. I found the song particularly interesting because it was…

I enjoy and listen to variety of music from classical music to rap music. I have attended many concerts, mostly symphony bands concerts. I have attended many of my sisters’ honor band concerts. However, interestingly, through whole my life, I have never experienced jazz music and I have never been to jazz concert. This was my first time attending a Jazz concert. Therefore, I didn’t know what kind of music to expect or any music that I was familiar to. This concert was a new experience for me. It was far different from a Hip Hop concert held in some big venue. The purpose of this concert was to show the talent of the future musicians in the art community of Lone Star College: North Harris Campus. Therefore, it was hard for me to decide which jazz concerts would give me most pleasure and exciting experience. I researched for jazz concerts listing and I decided to go to the concert they had at North Harris in April 27, 2015. One of the reason I went to this concert was, that it was in campus, it was free, and my Music Appreciation teacher mention it in class.…

The concert was labeled on youtube as a Bangladesh concert. The musical artists played Indian music, and there didn’t seem to be a composer. Every one just seemed to know how to play together. By being an active listener I learned that different cultures sometimes have very different musical styles. Most musical styles touch on all elements of SHMRGO. It was really neat to see how differently Indian music is put together. It’s obvious that they’re extremely talented musicians because they have to incorporate twice as many notes (semi-tones and quarter-tones) than whats typical to us, and they all did it so well. The type of instruments I think were used were the chordophones sitar, santoor, ektara, and the getnu. Also, I think either a bansuri, a venu, or a fiti was used (aerophones); and I’m almost positive that the dhad was played percussion wise. I think these instruments were played, but there were definitely a lot more instruments played than just these. The mood of concert definitely seemed like it was met to interpret happiness and excitement. As I mentioned, there was no one composer. However, the artists did communicate with each other through body language, and that was really interesting to watch play out.The Bangladesh concert performance was definitely interesting and educational, but for the most part it wasn’t pleasing to my ears, simply because I’m not accustomed to the style of music that was played. I completely respect the music that was played, and I honor that it’s different from the music that I listen to. To be frank, the pieces sounded like organized chaos. However, over it time it may become something I’d listen to for fun. Watching this concert definitely made me curious as to what different cultures think when they hear musical styles that are common to…

The concert I chose to attend was the University Jazz Bands’ Student Ensemble Concert on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. The concert featured two ensembles, both the Virginia Tech Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Lab Band. At this concert, I was both a perceptive listener due to my knowledge of music and music performance, and a casual listener enjoying my friends performing a great concert. I enjoy my nature of listening because I can appreciate the music on many different levels, and get much more out of the performances than the casual listener. The concert was entirely jazz music, performing hits by Tommy Wolf, Duke Ellington, Mike Tomaro, and on. The ensembles varied in exact composition, but both contained: alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones; trumpets and trombones; drums, bass, piano, and guitar. A performer of every instrument had a solo and one point or another in the various songs, which provided not only a great chance to hear individual musician’s talents, but also a great opportunity to hear how the instrument itself can be used in jazz improvisation and how styles vary from instrument to instrument due to the nature of playing/performing them.…

On February 24th, I attended the West Michigan Concert Winds “Winner and Winds” concert. West Michigan Concert Winds is a volunteer group that performs instrumental music to the community. This ensemble contains a wide range of musical talents from all different backgrounds. Some members are college students, some teachers. There was also many current or retired band directors apart of the ensemble. They performed all different genres of music from a Sousa march to an Irish wake by A.J. Potter. There was also a scholarship acceptance performance by a local high school junior who was amazing at the clarinet.…

This essay has been a review of the concert I attended. In the preceding paragraphs, I have explained the musical elements that went well, what could have been better and my personal opinion of the concert. As a musician, I learned a lot from attending this performance, both about the music itself and what I should strive for in my own performances. I hope that through this essay I was able to share this new knowledge with you. I look forward to putting my new knowledge to work in a practical way as I prepare my next…
