Case Study Report Freshdirect
COMPANY NAME/WEBSITE/INDUSTRY
FreshDirect/www.freshdirect.com / Grocery

BACKGROUND/HISTORY
FreshDirect is an online grocer that delivers to residences and offices in the New York City metropolitan area. FreshDirect also offers next-day delivery to most of Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island, Nassau County, Westchester County, Fairfield County, Hoboken, New Jersey and Jersey City, New Jersey. The company was founded in July 2001 by Joseph Fedele and Jason Ackerman; FreshDirect pronounced to the New York area that it was “the new way to shop for food.” FreshDirect has had some problems through the years begin challenged by local grocery stores offering the same type of service and parking problems among a few.

Jason Ackerman is the current CEO of FreshDirect.

The last total sales that I found were in 2008. In an article written by Mark Hamstra states that back in 2008 FreshDirect revenues of $215 million, and is projecting an increase of nearly 12% for 2009, to about $240 million. http://supermarketnews.com/retail-amp-financial/freshdirect-drives-profit-gains#ixzz223N8llfv

Our number one marketing objective is to reach our target market properly. We want from our target market to make a habit of eating their meals in our restaurants. If we are able to reach them, this will help us to grow at the end of the first year. In addition to this, we have another objective which is to decrease the number of people who are not aware and people who are resisting to not purchase our goods. In this case, we are planning to encourage them to taste our products and take their opinions about them to adjust our goods according to their needs and wants. Stressing our competitive advantage to our target customers is our another goal which makes them loyal to our restaurants.…

There have been many up and downs for FreshDirect. They set a goal of capturing 5% of the New York grocery market when they started delivering orders. They weren’t able to do this until 2011 when they could expand to a greater part of New York City and other states. (Dess & Eisner, p126) In 2007, workers were pushing to become unionized because of unfair wages based on the amount of work and hours. By the end of 2007, top management announced an immigration audit. This announcement caused their workforce to go from 900 plant workers to almost half that. (Dess & Eisner, p138) As a result, the push to become unionized failed. Through their hardship, they did find success in their chef developed 4-minute meal line and getting celebrities to endorse their service. They also developed a produce rating system to boost…
