Case Study Big Data
Volvo separated from Ford in 2010, it was breaking free from an IT infrastructure that consisted of a tangle of different systems and licenses. The need was there to develop a new standalone IT infrastructure that could provide better Business Intelligence, boost communication capabilities and enrich collaborations. It will be explained how The Volvo Car Corporation transformed data into knowledge, how they integrated cloud infrastructure into its networks and the advantage The Big Data Theory gives to Volvo Car Corporation.
How Volvo Car Corporation Transforms Data into Knowledge Volvo transforms this data into knowledge by taking all of these data streams into Volvo’s Data Warehouse and combining and analyzing them to yield all types of useful information. They even have the ability to obtain early predictive information on matters like manufacturing defects that haven’t occurred yet. This data gives Volvo insights through the use of analytic velocity or rapid, almost real-time analysis to assist them with providing better service to their customers and move ahead of their competitors. The software used gives Volvo the ability to make data driven decisions. An example of this is with regard to Volvo’s continuous focus on safety. Their vehicles have rated among the safest and a lot of that, I think, is their ability to review safety and system data collected from their vehicles. Another example would be developing the most effective maintenance plan for their vehicles because they know when specific components need to be checked or replaced.

Big Data Gives Volvo a Competitive Advantage The real time analytical abilities give Volvo a clear advantage over its competitors. Knowledge is power and having all of that power available and at your finger tips allows Volvo to use a Big Data Strategy to provide better service to their customers. They have the ability to accurately anticipate the needs of their customers. Big Data also gives

We need to have the ability to analyze all of our data and use it to create internal and external analytics for a digital one-to-one experience, similar to Amazon. I feel over the past 40 years Vanguard would be in Stage 2 of the analytical completion pyramid. We were never ‘flying blind’ as described in in Stage 1 but the rigor of systematically being able to leverage data for fact based decision making was minimal. Marketing was determined more by what we felt the customer wanted or management intuition.…

A great way for Nordstrom to collect and analyze definitive information is called Big Data. Underneath all of the comments on the internet is a huge amount of data about what customers actually do. This information can supply companies with important information about what customers click, what they purchase, and what there habits are. Although this method is great for gather information on core customers it also is not an easy task. It involves collecting data that is so large and complex that it is very difficult to process using typical on-hand database management tools. Some of the challenges using big data are having to capture information, the curation of the information, and also storage of the information. Not to mention also having to search for the information, transfer it so it can be collected, and analyzing it so it can be transformed into a visualization. It's better to use larger data sets because companies can aqcuire additional information from analysis of larger sets of related data, rather than smaller sets with the same overall amount of data. The amount of data that is collected is usually around a few dozen terabytes (one terabyte is 1000 gigabytes) up to many petabytes (1000 terabytes) of data in a single data set. I feel the use of big data will open of doors to more productivity growth and consumer surplus. Other companies that have used big data have…

Throughout our class we have discussed many different types of advances in technology. We have also discussed many different types of companies that have progressed and developed because of technology. It has been quite amazing to see all these new advances that I have never realized existed. There are even some that I have been using but not realize how it works or what I’m using. One of the topics we discussed that I found really interesting and got a better understanding was what cloud computing really is. I had always thought it was just a storage that only phones use to help store memory. It turned out to have a much bigger meaning and a great way to have a good business. One of the other things I learned was how Google gets its information for its maps. I also found it interesting to learn how Google makes money through there website which I could never figure out. It is an amazing company that continues to grow throughout the years.…
