Candle Burning Lab
Problem: What are the requirements for and characteristics of a candle flame? What are the products of the combustion of a candle? The purpose of this lab was to find out the properties and characteristics of a candle. Also the purpose was to find the remnants that the combustion of a candle leaves behind as gas. I learned that the candle that is burning releases a certain gas into the air. I also learned that limewater has a chemical reaction when exposed to that gas and turns red.
Hypothesis: For this Lab, my hypothesis was that the candles are going from solid to gas because of a high and quick rise in temperature.
Materials
1. Large birthday candles 2. Matches 3. One used disposable miniature loaf pan
4. 250 ml limewater

Solid rubber stopper to fit the flask Procedure
1. Light a candle and allow a drop or two of liquid wax to fall into the center of the pan. Press the candle upright onto the melted wax before it can solidify. If the candle burns too low, repeat this step with a new candle.
2. Observe the flame of the burning candle for a few minutes. Try to observe what if burning and where the burning takes place. Observe the different regions of the flame.
3. Light a second candle and gently blow out the flame of the first candle and move the flame from the second candle into the smoke of the first. Record your observations.
4. Pour tap water into the pan to a depth of about 1 cm.
5. Quickly lower an Erlenmeyer flask over the lit candle so that the mouth of the flask is lower than the water level. Allow the flask to remain in place for approximately one minute. Record your observations.
6. Lift the flask out of the water, turn it upright, and add about 25 ml of limewater. Stopper the flask and swirl the solution for approximately one minute. Record your observations. If the solution becomes cloudy or chalky, calcium carbonate was formed, indicating the presence of carbon dioxide in the flask. Qualitative Data

The lab was not infallible, however, as the samples could have been easily contaminated, mixed, or out of order. Also, burning the woods splints caused the flames to appear orange, affecting the results in several possible ways. The results seemed similar to each other and many of them seemed to share a slightly orange hue, perhaps because the splint was being burned unintentionally at the same time. The first unknown was identified as Calcium due to the similarities in color and the second unknown was identified as strontium for the same reason. For future experimenters, the solutions should be labeled so that in the future, the chance for error is dramatically…

    Tirrill Burn Experiment

The very first experiment had the hypothesis that the temperature of a burner flame can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of gas to air in the mixture to be burned. During this experiment, my partner and I gathered our materials of the paper matches, straight pins, copper wire, laboratory burners, rubber tubing, tongs, and evaporating dish. Making sure we had our safety goggles on and the material we needed, we connected the Tirrill burner into the gas and lit the burner with the match, having the air vents closed and the gas on. When the burner was lit, we noticed that the flame had a luminous, smoky yellow appearance. We then used a pair of tongs to hold the evaporating dish towards the top of the flame for 10 to 20 seconds. We observed…

How to test the variable is to burn a scented and unscented candle at the same time and see witch candle burned the quickest. There wasn’t any flaws in this experiment. When changing this experiment use different brands, scents or waxes and see which one would burns faster. The results were the unscented candle burned faster but they both burned at the same speed rate so it doesn’t really matter too much. Other brands could change the effect of the burn rate than other brands that are out there and they may also be made differently. There are more than one wax and that might change the burn rate of the candles. Some waxes may last longer than others. One thing that can be change the candle scents and see if that has any effect on the burning rate of the candle. There were no flaws in this experiment but if there were they would be the simplest things like, not pushing the timer, setting the timer wrong, and not doing it correctly.…

The wick used in a candle is an absorbent twine and must have strong capillary action. When the wick is lit, the wax around the wick will melt due to the heat of the flame. The capillary action of the wick will absorb the melted wax and pull it upwards. When the wax is exposed to the flame, it will vaporize and the wax vapor burns. The wick does not burn as quickly, because the vaporizing wax will help to cool the temperature of the wick and protect it.…

A candle (C25H52) is a solid block of wax with an embedded wick, which is lit to provide light, and sometimes heat, and historically as a method of keeping time. Candles have appeared as a source of fine and ultrafine particles in indoor air (e.g. Hussein et al. 2006). Fine et al. (1999), found high Organic Carbon (OC) emissions connected to the extinction of the candle and high EC concentrations when the flame was burning unsteady.…
