In my life I have been a part of a few bureaucracies, now that I have joined the Army. In my opinion, I am in one of the world’s largest bureaucracies. Although, I don’t always believe that America’s views are always in the best interest, or of the people of this country, I do have to follow them and respect them. The military is ruled by office as well as the country. In the military, there are a lot of formal and informal normalities. For example, wearing of certain uniforms during certain functions, such as the Military Ball. Uniforms also worn for other officials such as the President of the United States, congressmen and women, as well as foreign political figures. No one role applies to one single solider; we all have transferable skills that are used throughout the army and the civilian world. As you get experience and become an expert in your job, your role moves up to higher command position. Experts have authority in the military; they are trained to take the task to lead, as well as making sure the job is done correctly. There are many informal norms as well in how America grooms the soldiers, to make them better in their classifications. In the military there are certain membership criteria that allow some members to join, but not others. Based on part of the explicit criteria of membership, that is whether the person qualifies to belong according to the groups’ norms. Although membership in a military unit, group of coworkers, or a pick up football team are all too some degree voluntary in comparison to membership to a fraternity, sorority, or gang. The first three depend nevertheless on a process in which candidates are evaluated and judged acceptable or unacceptable. Membership criteria differ from group to group, and they change overtime within a particular groups or organizations. The differences depend on the relative importance of ascribed versus acquired states of candidates. The criteria used in the
