BOILING POINTS AND MELTING POINTS PART 2 Name: Grethel Zegarra

HYPOTHESIS
The boiling point in degrees Celsius will increase as the number of carbon atoms increase. The melting point of the unknown will indicate its mixed substances.
The boiling point will increase as a result of the different branching of the OH, the melting point will be affected by the different positioning of the OH on the benzene ring.
PURPOSE
To introduce two physical properties, the boiling point and the melting point, that organic chemists use to identify organic molecules.
BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION
Organic chemistry is the branch of chemistry that deals with carbon containing molecules. Carbon can bond to other atoms forming multiple chains and rings, thus creating an unlimited number of organic compounds to exist. Each organic compound has many chemical and physical properties associated with its structure. In this experiment, both the boiling point and the melting point were used in order to identify different organic molecules. The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid equals the surrounding atmospheric pressure. The melting point is the temperature at which the solid becomes a liquid. PROTOCOL
A. Boiling Points

1) First, all the materials were gathered and the Boiling point apparatus was assembled. 2) Two mL of methanol were poured into a dry test tube, and two small boiling stones were added. The tube was secured to a ring stand so that the surface of the methanol was slightly below the oil level in the beaker and the tip of the thermometer was about 1 cm above the surface of the methanol. 3) The mineral oil was heated. The temperature of the oil bath was checked with a different thermometer. As the sample boiled, the vapor caused the temperature reading of the thermometer to increase until it remained constant.
